ITV had a decent 2013 so were always going to do well. Next year will be very different.

The BBC have done very well over the years at Bafta but in recent years I think they must have insulted the chairmans wife or something.

Perhaps we shouldn't be too surprised as the Olympics wasn't recognised either -arguably the greatest British sporting broadcast ever.

I am cynical. I'm not saying ITV didn't deserve awards for their shows, but some awards were just baffling. The two BBC shows that deserved an award was Adventures in Time and Space and The Andy Murray Final which resulted in a historic British win. All the rest were fair enough but Graham Norton getting beaten by A League of their Own? Come on, it doesn't make sense. Broadechurch in particular deserved its award. Genuinely quality telly, but, wasn't that on early in 2013 or did it finish after last years Baftas? I forget. I think a lot of BAFTA committee members received a fair bit of back handers from C4, it is absolutely baffling how it won so many awards when they've just had their worst year in history!

Last time I looked, the BBC is the only network to have increased its share in the first four months of 2014. Channel 4 is down 2% and ITV 7%.

These awards relate to programmes shown in the last calendar year, so Broadchurch wasn't eligible for last year's awards (it ran from March to May 2013).

They would have put DA forward - it just didn't get shortlisted.

I wonder if BBC Sport's history of excellence works against them for such things - it's essentially taken for granted, and it's probably the same reason BBC News gets overlooked too. An outstanding edition of ITV News just stands out a bit more - though I do think ITV News at it's best is excellent.

And back to the Olympics but I've always said BBC Sport as a whole got overlooked there thanks to the attention on Clare Balding.

That was quite a significant victory tonight actually. I can't remember the last time ITV picked up the BAFTA prize for drama.

Tonight's awards relate to programmes in 2013. The BBC received two BAFTAs last year for their Olympics coverage in 2012. Don't forget BAFTA is basically members voting for their chums in the industry (possibly in the hope of work), you have to pay quite a bit to be a member. The only exception is the Radio Times award. The greatest British sporting broadcast ever was arguably the 1966 World Cup Final with 30 million viewers on BBC and 3 million on ITV, a figure never again achieved on British television.

That was most likely the point, Bafta does like an angle, like how they awarded The Fades after that was axed.


That was the only series that deserved to be imo, it probably would have won that year if it wasn't up against Sherlock.

I think there's some truth to that on the sports front. The Paralympics got a lot of love because it was on Channel 4, a bit different and a bit unexpected. Everyone expected the BBC to go all-out on the Olympics - they did and it didn't much surprise anyone, despite being a much more substantial endeavour and technical feat.

Iv obviously blanked this out but which two BAFTA's did the BBC get for the Olympics in 2012?
( with regard to the year I was alluding to 2012 because the BBC also missed out again this time with the Wimbledon coverage)

They were technical awards at the 'craft' BAFTAs, I think. Not on the main night.
