I hope they do. Its incredible boring reading the ratings on Tuesday when ITV are at 2m other than Emmerdale and the BBC are always over 4million. A bit of competitiveness wouldn't go a miss.

The commissions of a new Police drama on all year, and two 13 episode dramas is promising and is more ambitious than ITV have been in the recent past. It makes for a more exciting channel.

And also they're taking advantage of their high rating factual series, extending Long Lost Family and POG dogs to 11 episodes.

I can't see Tuesdays getting any better without significant change and investment, they already struggle on Thursdays and Fridays without the soaps (Bar the good start to the year), now they have Tuesdays to fill as well soon!

There was something in Broadcast about it. Part of ITV's problems on Tuesday are down to them having Champions League matches there so some programmes can't get long runs there as they will come off after a few weeks. It's also because they do put a lot of crap there as well.

ITV need to make something that will knock dead Holby City out.

There will be a bit more investment I assume now that money has been freed up for no longer paying for Champions League/UEFA/FA Cup football.

Holby City's ratings aren't good enough. Bake Off showed that there are far more viewers around at 8pm on a Tuesday than Holby is getting. EastEnders proved that again last night. Holby City can't get 6m and if ITV really tried they could batter it.

If they fill Tuesday with the sort of programming they have been filling Wed/Thur/Fri with recently then I wouldnt hold my breath.

How much does it cost per hour fot them to broadcast football as opposed to say a drama or factual? You can see why I ask.

I wonder how much damage Corrie/BGT will do to Happy Valley next week, hopefully it can hold up but I can't see it being above 5m. Wouldn't be surprised to see the press spinning it as well, twisting it into people stopping watching because of the violence, while failing to mention Corrie/BGT.

They'll be more likely to say Happy Valley is down due to the clash. Most of the press love this programme.

I would actually put move Pointless to 8pm on Fridays. Make it faster paced with two games in one hour rather than one in 45 mins. Replace it at teatimes with The Link or Perfection all week round. I don't see why it couldn't get around 6m in that slot, not much worse than EE. It might attract more viewers too if its only on twice a week (including the Saturday slot).

I dont think it even matters at this stage although Last Tango did not do that badly last year against IAC - it was down but not disasterously.

It will hold up fine.Its a strong drama, left the last episode on a cliffhanger so viewers will return to it next week at 9pm. Corrie and the BGT Results will be dented but will make up for it in +1. This is where +1 is important and shouldn't be cast aside as some do. Its giving the viewers an option to watch on the same day but later.

Happy Valley will stay over 5million

That doesn't usually stop the Daily Mail, and sometimes the Telegraph, sticking the boot in when they can.


I agree it doesn't matter now, if Wainwright wants to do another series she'll get one*, but any dip next week would affect the following week and it would be shame for not to end on a high, ratings-wise.

*Do we think there's scope for a second series? Although if ITV/Chibnall can get one out of Broadchurch then BBC/Wainwright can get one of out of this. It all depends on how it ends though.

What would you show at 7:30 on Tuesdays? No doubt an hour long One Show or something that is basically filler.

Or where you'd put Holby City, I doubt it will be axed anytime soon, regardless of how unpopular it is here.

Good job people here don't schedule, or we'd have programmes moving every few weeks. One decent rating at 8pm and suddenly a decades old pattern of episodes should be ripped up.

I would argue that one of the reasons some people have picked up on the violence in Happy Valley is because it was promoted as a Sally Wainwright series whilst being quite different in tone to Scott & Bailey or LTIH - I'd say there are some expectations issues in there.

I'd also say that the violence in HV is perhaps more real than in the likes of Silent Witness (or many other BBC shows), yet works because it (so far) feels true to the characters, rather than gratuitous and stylised. I think it works that the characters actually have some kind of heart and feel rounded, too - something many other series could learn from.

I'd be extremely surprised if it isn't recommissioned - and last night's episode was indeed edge of the seat stuff - and SO much better than Scott & Bailey, which looks anaemic in comparison.

Whilst a few posters here clearly dislike Holby, it does a recent job in the ratings, not spectacular not bad but satisfactory week in week out, the Holby twins with a Casualty inform people on medical matters part of the BBC remit and above all as drama goes are cheap to make, the cost of replacing 52 hours a year of Holby and 46 episodes of Casually makes the decision for the BBC impossible, there isn't the scripts out there or the time to commission replacements that are often up to eight weeks long, and not consistent performers, and as Waterloo road is ending priority is to replace that first, and not increase the budget.

Absolutely fantastic rating for Eastenders. This is what the BBC must do everytime Itv try and attack EE with hour long EmFarm episodes. Simply move EE to 8pm for an hour long and shift Holby City to Thursdays 8pm. Holby will end up denting EmFarm on the Thursday anyway so thats an extra bonus.

Great for Happy Valley too. It benefitted slightly from the EE lead-in so even more incentive for the Beeb to move EE to 8pm if Itv schedule hour long EmFarms. Happy Valley has been drama hit of the year statisitically. I had a feeling it would rate well, these kind of rural police dramas normally do. It's got some well known actors too which helps. Sarah Lancashire has moved onto bigger and better things since leaving Coro, now a loyal part of the BBC family.

No offence but you are naiive if you think Itv are going to spend and invest heavily into their Tuesday night schedules once they lose the Champions League. Itv are struggling as it is on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays on nights where there is a soap lead-in. Why on earth would they invest on Tuesdays when their bigger priorities will be to get good audiences post-Coro or post-EmFarm on Wednesday to Fridays. Tuesdays will simply have loads of crap filler, factual shows and niche documentaries. No significant investment there. All the stuff in Broadcast blaming the Champions League for Itvs tuesday night problems is a load of bullshit. Itv had the Champions league on Wednesdays for three years between 2009-2012, their Tuesday night schedule was still crap even though there were no football interuptions. It wont be any different once they finally lose the Champions league. The bbc will simply get stronger on Tuesdays as the only thing Itv had which rated well on tuesdays was champions league!

Scott and Bailey is fine as a drama. Happy Valley is just a more raw drama, with a heap of dark stories.
