Personally I think ITV would be better hiring some of the soap fans on here who actually know their soap inside out and know which storylines would work and ones that wouldn't.
Really
A lot of the storyline idea's I 've seen being bandied about on the soaps forum are utterly dreadful

If EeastEnders beats Corrie tonight (which is very likely) and again next week, I can see that becoming a trend. Both Corrie and Emmerdale are rating poorly and should be doing better. If they were EE's rating wouldn't be looking so impressive.
I think this is a bit premature.

EE has had a good week (and deservedly so) - a decently told & well constructed story that's had a "huge" amount of promotion.
I'd give it two weeks before making any "judgement" on the situation.

ED's problem is that it can never compete with CS and EE for publicity, but it is capable of pulling in viewers with a big story. Big stories need to be well told, however ...

I can only claim to be a casual viewer but those ratings don't surprise me. Every time I've seen it, I've had a sense of stories being dragged out way beyond their natural life and characters floating around aimlessly. ITV has every reason to be concerned - but given that everything on-screen must have signed off by Jane Hudson, who oversees both CS and ED, that would rather indicate that she's either unable to influence what's getting on-screen or she's in denial about how weak it is. Put it against an apparently resurgent EE, and it looks even weaker.

Bearing in mind how strong it was only six months ago, this is not good ... emergency surgery required soon if it carries on like this - but by whom?
The 'Killer Cameron' storyline was brilliantly done but what followed didn't keep people watching. It doesn't seem too bad from what I've seen from Emmerdale lately.

To me Emmerdale has always been good at spectacular set piece storylines but EastEnders and Coronation Street do character driven storylines better.

If EastEnders keeps the good ratings up for a month then the turnaround is really happening. EastEnders fans should enjoy the success it's having and stop worrying about the competition. It IS possible for Corrie and EastEnders to rate well at the same time.

EE has posted some fantastic shares and figures this week. I'm really pleased for them. Hopefully they can cling onto this success and really build some momentum. Very frustrating though as for me Dec/Jan/Feb delivered the most consistently brilliant drama seen in years and I would have liked the show to have rated accordingly. God damn Kirkwood and Newman for losing tthose viewers!

Btw did BBC1 promote Parking Mad? Its only that ITV had no promotion for Wanted: A Family of My Own and got 2.3m for it. I imagine the viewers of Masterchef just had the control quantum locked on BBC1. When ITV has a weak programme (Ade at Sea) preceding a new programme, its seem less people are inclined to turn over and instead stay on BBC1.
Oh no, not viewers sticking with BBC1 again! Must be that special secret signal that Samuel's been putting in the transmissions that brainwashes viewers into watching programmes they don't want to watch.

There was plenty of promotion for the adoption show. I read an interview with Nicky Campbell in The Sun at the weekend. Here's an article about it from The Independent the other day - http://www.independent.co.uk/life-st...s-9273470.html - and here's an article about it in the Daily Mail the other day - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/ar...dren-home.html

As we know, nobody watches anything on BBC1 because they actually want to watch it.

The creative turnaround for EastEnders pretty much started from December. As you say there have been some great moments that didn't get watched by as many viewers as they deserved. It's staggering to think that some of the awful stuff from Kirkwood and Newman rated better.

They've been long overdue some good ratings news.

You would have thought Jamaica Inn and EE would be certainties.
They bet put Tuesdays EE episode on there.

I wonder why the big promotional push for this week worked when the previous ones did not seem to have much effect?

If people are wondering why "share" for the soaps is high it's because the total numbers of people watching TV is quite low.

e.g.

7.5m viewers when total audience is 30m = 25% share
7.5m viewers when total audience is 15m = 50% share

The soaps tend to hang onto audiences better than TV as a whole does.
But share for soaps isn't always high. That certainly wasn't the case for EastEnders for months. When a programme gets continually high shares no matter the total viewership then it is doing well.

Well I've certainly noticed the animated billboards on the tube every day this week reminding us of the killer storyline. Very eye-catching. I can't remember an outdoor campaign on this scale for EE..

Nicky was plugging it on The One Show on Wednesday and he was on This Morning too.

Masterchef is going good damage to EmFarm's ratings, denting its 8pm share by about 5%. BBC need to think about airing more MasterChef episodes throughout the year, another spin-off like MasterChef The Professionals moviong to BBC One would be a good idea. Extending the normal run of MasterChef by another 3 or so weeks would be a good move too.
Yeah, yet more Masterchef - just what TV needs.

True. They always seem to hate on BBC program's. I bet they won't even show it and if they do show an episode of EE it will be Fridays one, which was no where near as good as Tuesdays. If this happens then that's a complete joke.

The ad campaign for EastEnders has been very good. TV, radio and posters. Viewers do like a whodunit. What's odd is that other well publicised storylines and returns haven't pushed EastEnders over 8m in overnights or the share to over 35%.

The only Carter moments that got over 8m on overnights were Shirley's return and the arrival of Stan. The arrival of The Carter brood, return of Stacey, Janine's trial didn't do anything for ratings compared to the Lucy Beale storyline.

EastEnders would actually be getting 9m in January with these shares it's getting now.

They already are if watched through the TV. Must be getting more the norm now. We have four different versions of iPlayer on our TV: Sky, smart TV, blu-ray and Chromecast.
We need to include ITV Player to.The industry needs to get together and agree new common standards.

They don't need to mention EE at all, if they do and some of it is negative - just know that not all of it is not scripted.

There have been plenty of negative comments from viewers of Gogglebox of ITV shows. It just depends what makes for a more entertaining show.

Didn't take long for the British weather to revert to type!

Looking ahead to tonight's offerings, is it just me or has Carr done better in the guests department than Norton once again this week? Did well to get Lohan, Freeman will bring in the viewers also.

It might sound daft but...

I think its because everyone knows Ian Beale. Even people who aren't casual watchers know who he is. He has been in our living rooms for 30 years. So viewers are connected to him and are feeling his grief. That's why Lucy was the perfect choice of character for this storyline.

I'm a bit surprised at the rating for Wanted. I would have thought that as it shares the same presenter as Long Lost Family and is in the same vein as that programme (its made by the same production company) it would have perhaps attracted more of the 5M people who were tuning into Long Lost Family.

I think EastEnders could get its best Friday ratings in a year with tonight's episode.
