Hi I hope I've put this in the correct part of the forum and there are people that can answer several questions I have regarding my phone line installation. I'll try to explain it best I can...

I live in a city centre Georgian building that's grade 2 listed. In it's previous incarnation it was a restaurant but has now been divided into a salon and the upstairs section is the flat I live in.

There's no phone line in my flat but there is in the salon below. I am booked in to get broadband internet and a phone line installed three weeks today.

As my flat is a duplex my lounge is at the front on the top floor but the telephone pole that serves my street is at the rear of the flat, on another street a fair few metres away.

The nearest room in my flat to the pole is the kitchen so would they install the phone line in the kitchen as it's the first internal wall they have to come through, meaning I'm then responsible for getting a data extension kit for the router etc... as I don't have the room for a telephone & router in my kitchen.

Also does anybody know if there's some kind of limitations/rules to drilling or tacking wire to the walls, if it's a listed building?

I've sought permission from the landlord to get the phone line installed but he didn't say much else. I've asked him stuff like this via text at the start of the week but I'm waiting to hear back from him and I'm getting impatient.

Also, I've browsed online that read that you can use cat5e cables for telephone lines. Is this correct as in my lounge coming out of the wall is a cat5e cable which seems to go through the walls and floors, downstairs somewhere, I assume into the salon below. I barely remember my landlord said when I moved in "if you want stuff like the internet there's a cable here" - referring to the cat5 cable, shown here:

Assuming this is a working cable, any ideas as to what it would be connected to in the salon? Would it be some kind of switchboard or router etc...?

Is this cable any use to the installer to perhaps put a phone socket on the end of?

If so, would I personally need to get a plug put on the end of the cable at my end because as you can see it's just wires at the moment. Or would the installer crimp one on for me?

I will be checking with the landlord what/if the cable is connected to soon, but like most landlords he's hard to get hold of.

Any info anyone has with the above would be appreciated as I'm a little apprehensive of the installation day and would like to iron out any problems I can beforehand.

Hope you can bear to read all that lol

You will need listed building consent only if the cabling materially affects the character of the building (unlikely unless the route is really obtrusive). Talk to your local planning department for advice.

cat5e works fine

Could be anything, you will need to find the other end and see where it goes.

BT will not reuse non-standard cabling that was not installed by BT. If you want to use it you will need to sort it out yourself.

The installer will use new cabling to install a master socket at a location of your choice (within reason). It is then up to you wire up extensions.

That is a coaxial cable by the look of it. So several possibilities, none of which are phone line. Could be TV aerial, satellite dish, cable TV/broadband service. Or something else entirely, like a CCTV camera.
