new album and remasters with previously unreleased material

A new album, a deluxe reissue of Purple Rain and more unheard music: That's what Prince fans can expect from his new global licensing deal with Warner Bros. Records.

"A brand-new studio album is on the way and both Warner Bros. Records and Eye are quite pleased with the results of the negotiations and look forward to a fruitful working relationship," Prince said in a news release.

The deal covers all of Prince's albums, from 1978's For You to the new one. The announcement comes two months before the 30th anniversary of the release of his best-selling album, 1984's Purple Rain, which has sold more than 13 million copies in the U.S. Prince plans a digitally re-mastered deluxe version of the album to coincide with the anniversary.

Other planned projects will follow, according to the press release.

Lately, Prince has been playing with an all-female power trio called 3RDEYEGIRL, occasionally posting YouTube videos and releasing music through the group's website.

Are you still sure he is not going to play Glastonbury? it would tie in very nicely with the 30th anniversary of Purple Rain, which was released on the 25th June.

Prince's relationship with Warner has been an ongoing saga.

madonna never had her own label, she was founder of maverick records which was owned by warners and released stuff through warners. prince had his own labels paisley park which released material via warners and then npg records which used various labels to distribute albums and did some true indie releases and various things such as the albums distributed via newspapers, magazines and target.

most of the "labels" owned by musicians like that are just boutique labels which are just offshoots of the major label the artist is signed too, as part of a deal to retain the artist themselves as usually majors have no interest in these deals as few of them make any money

actually in prince's case he now has all his masters back and his label NPG is actually licensing the reissues and new material for distribution via warners, so he basically still has his own label

we'll see how long it lasts though

I suspect regaining control of his earlier music under warner was probably key to the whole decision. wouldn't suprise me if he now owns the rights to his entire back catalogue.

yes i think that's the case. but now he does own his masters again. the pair faced a legal battle as the rights came up after 30 years, but in a nutshell, WB couldn't do too much without his input, the back catalogue had died a death and they made their money back on it, so basically giving him back the rights to everything in exchange for getting a chance to make more money back in reissues was probably worth it, and prince possible let them do that in exchange for getting his masters back, so little to no money exchanged between hands. the downside for WB is they have to release a new album which they probably have little interest in

whats interesting is the track the breakdown which is now on itunes wasn't on the 3rdeyegirl album plectrumelectrum which was due for release by kobalt, plus it's the older version of the track (it's got andy allo on vox) as opposed to the newer more live sounding studio version. and i wonder where epic/sony sits with all this as they put out the track with zooey deschanel and prince. knowing him he probably wants to put 3 albums out on 3 different labels but of course it'll end in no albums out by anyone
