Humax HDR-1000S and Youview
Hi,
Few questions .... Just double checking that if I use both boxes in the same room I can reprogramme one box to use a different RC code or are they native different out of the box? Is there any preference which one I should reprogramme? Also can you set the box for HD so that it defaults and orders channels logically or is it still out of sequence? Which will give the better HDMI picture? Thanks. |

Yes you can change the channel of the HDR1000S remote so it doesn't conflict.
Freeview-HD PSB channels are largely consecutive, the Freesat ones are not (you cannot change the order). Last question impossible to answer. The same channels on both platforms have different bitrates. Generally Channel 5 and the family channels are poor on satellite (Channel 5 has elected to squash all the SD channels onto 1 transponder). As a result the picture quality is to be honest CRAP ![]() The other main channels especially the HD ones are very similar, so much so your TV is likely to make a small difference. Satellite channels are all transmitted 1080i, some Freeview content is 1080p25. In practice the difference is minute and if you are actually watching the programme then you will be very unlikely to see the difference. TBH base your choice on the different channel availability, for the best choice get both. |

.Since CH5 upgraded their system on satellite, all their SD channels are much better than they were. The channels all run at 704x576 again and there's none of the macro blocking of old. They look very good indeed, certainly no worse than any of the other PSB's on satellite. On Freeview, only CH5 itself runs at 720x576, all the others in the family run at 544x576 with the usual low bitrates one expects from Com muxes. Do a like for like comparison of CH5's suite on Freesat and Freeview and I guarantee that the channels on satellite will look better and more detailed than the ones on Freeview.

Sorry Graham, but I've got to strongly disagree with this.

I never use the other 5 channels. Only one I ever use is CH5 itself.
I do still find the CH5 picture slightly better on my Humax Freesat box, than on my Humax Freeview box though. The differences between 5+1, 5+24, 5* and 5USA on Freesat and Freeview should be very obvious though. They look much better on satellite, and again 'fill' the 16:9 screen properly.

Thanks for the responses. The interesting thing that is holding me back is the issue I'm trying to resolve!
It is so basic ...it's laughable, ![]() I escaped from a £90 plus per month Sky habit and now have Now TV plus I was a beta for YouView and have that box. I've been using my legacy Sky STB as a tuner. All I want is to be able to use the guide in the logical order. That's all. When I use to want to see what is on I use to press on the Sky RC TV Guide and it would take me straight to 101, 102, 103, etc. then if it was BBC I wanted I'd simply press back and then 141. Not elegant but I could live with that. Now the enhancements change all that. Double click TV Guide get's you in, but 5 backward clicks get you out to a clear screen. Accidentally go 6 backward and it takes you to the guide starting on the current page ie 141 not 101. so it's then 5 clicks back again. It is driving me barmy. I hate it so much that's why i was hoping there was an STB where HD was properly and logically integrated in the guide or giving the option to reorder. That's why I was thinking of the Humax Freesat box which would in most situations give me one to view and one to record. But I want an easy guide.! It seems such a basic thing. |

You're unlikely to find a major difference between the two, given they use similar picture resolutions, although the 704x576 frame on the satellite version fits a 16:9 screen better with overscan off.

Hard to really tell much from those small pictures Graham, although I can tell which is which purely from the resolution.
![]() Not sure why you've added BBC stuff either, as there's not really an issue with them on any platform. The debate was about the CH5 suite on satellite. Put any of the CH5 spin-off channels on a large screen tv and the differences between Freesat and Freeview will be clear to see.

I don't need to view them on a tv as they'll all be pretty much the same anyway and I can easily do comparisons with my own tv equipment.
The original debate was to do with your claim that the CH5 family was'crap' quality on satellite, which they most certainly are not, especially when compared to their Freeview counterparts. You can tell that just by viewing them, but for some reason you don't want to do that. Comparing BBC screens on Freeview and Freesat is completely irrelevant in this case. |

Channel 5 certainly was diabolical on satellite, as you say it's now pretty similar. That was the reason I posted the untouched frame captures to let others make up their minds. Any decent quality pictures from Channel 5 you have to pay through the nose to watch. CH 5 HD used to be free to watch on a Sky box with a decoder card, even an expired one. It's not anymore, frankly for a so called PSB broadcaster they are a disgrace. |

I'm not going to disagree on CH5 being a bit of a mickey mouse outfit in some cases, especially with things like accurate recording etc.
I do like a few of their American shows though, so just have to grin and bear it sometimes. Despite that, I'm always a fair person in my assessments, which is why I have to give them their due for the improved picture quality on Freesat, although it did take a ridiculously long time for them to actually address the problem.

I wondered whether anyone has suggestions .....
![]() Thanks. Don't have a Youview box but the other Humax Freeview boxes like the HDR FOX T2 work the same way (I would be surprised if the Humax Youview box doesn't do the same). |
