Fruit salad ?
Andy Birkenhead
19-04-2014
I went to Asda yesterday and bought :
A Honeydew Melon, a Papaya, some black seedless grapes, some strawberries, some pears and a pineapple.
Would this make a decent tasting fruit salad ?
If I make it, how do I stop the fruit from discolouring ?
I also have some Navel oranges and bananas
I was going to get some kiwi fruit, but Kiwi and Pineapple have the same kind of taste / texture to me !

Put lemon juice on the apples and bananas

I like to make a fruit jelly (Hartleys Strawberry) with fruit juice instead of water and put all the fruit in it. You need to let it set a bit and then add the fruit otherwise it all ends up at the top. I also use lemon juice to stop the apples browning.

By the way, how's the employment situation these days, Andy?

I decided not to use the pears because they are as hard as bricks !

Evil c - I had a job for 5 months (agency), but I was laid off on April 4th

Off topic but sorry to hear you were laid off. I'll keep my eyes open locally when I'm out and about and PM you if anything looks promising.

you could also whizz up all the fruit and add some other liquid or ice cream and make a smoothie or a fruity juice drink..but a fruit salad is still good

Definitely lemon juice, stops it all going bad! Also don't do what I did and leave the whole fruit salad out of the fridge then take a big chunk of melon out the tub. Rancid!

Make a stock syrup. (A quick and easy alternative is to just dissolve a load of sugar in some water.)

I made a tropical fruit salad yesterday.

1 Pineapple. Top and tail. Cut lengthways into 4. Cut lengthways again into 8. Slice off core and skin and chop into chunks.

2 Bananas, sliced and squeeze a lemon over
2 kiwi fruit
1 jaffa orange peeled and separated into segments.

Boil up sugar water to make a syrup and add to a cupful of orange squash. Pour over salad and stir. Serve with ice-cream.
