Would you like a revitalised channel 5 to make a niche soap?
If Richard Desmond manages to sell channel 5 to a company thats willing to invest in it and british talent_Would you welcome the idea of a niche appeal new british soap being made and shown on channel 5.I stress niche as I dont believe its possible to make a new major soap from scratch now?
More to the point do you think it stands a good chance of success? |

At the time of the Family Affairs axing, it was stated that this was for purely financial reasons and that its since been cheaper for Channel 5 to show both Home and Away and Neighbours (which they'd both "poached" from other UK broadcasting channels since).
So don't hold out a lot of hope for any new stuff on C5 like this, TBH (IMO). |

They could make their own soap for a considerable amount less. Times have changed, everything is cheaper when it comes to production yet visual quality remains high

That would be great for H&A. Not sure where it would leave Neighbours though!!

I would prefer an edgy nighttime soap rather than a safe daytime soap.

Something in the style of Sunset Beach would be quite cool. I think if a new soap was to be launched, that would be the only way to do it without making it the same as the rest of them.

I agree. A dark soap full of sex, violence and profanity, sounds like a winner to me

Channel 5 have now axed Home and Away from the lunchtime slot, as has been raised on another thread - so this slot is now freed up and could now be available for something like what has been mentioned here being produced by Channel 5 in the daytime.

http://www.theguardian.com/media/201...ichard-desmond I wonder whether the new buyer of C5 whos a big player and has expressed anintent to massively increase UK content will be tempted to go down this path of a new niche soap?

Niche doesn't seem to work in the UK, Night and Day springs to mind

I think a latenight soap would be better so it can be more "adult"
Channel 5 would be the place to try late night and "adult" IMO, just depends if they would take a gamble and a chance on it, or not - and depends if they consider there would be a market for it. Look forward to this and it would be interesting to see if indeed, any channels, ever attempt to kick off a new soap, in the future - niche, or otherwise. Depends on the market, target audience etc and prospects of success overall, though, I would think. |

It's been taken over by Viacom. Do you remember that creepy deep mechanical voice that said 'viacom' at the end of Where's Wally?
Family Affairs was axed because it was losing viewers. I had already stopped watching it, but my mum said that it was crap and that's why it was axed |

Would be a good idea if Channel 5 could get it right - Channel 4 have done late night well before with Hollyoaks and Brookside and ITV tried, obviously with Night and Day.

I think the reasons for Family Affairs ending were due to it overreaching itself in an already saturated market. But tv has changed even since then. |

The only way a new soap could work would be to do a parody type soap like sunset beach or footballers wives, totally Ott. A normal type soap just would not work in todays market.
