Love this genre of music. My favourite band was Lush.
If you want to hear a current band in a similiar genre, I would recommend some albums by this group called Blonde Redhead. They are still recording and touring

Fire up Spotify and search for the 'Never Lose That Feeling' CDs (there are 3) the third one is the best. There's good and awful on the other two.

Also, 'Blue Skied N Clear' is particularly a Slowdive tribute double CD.

You should check out Engineers, you will have to search youtube for

Come In Out Of The Rain
Brighter As We Fall
Sometimes I Realise
To An Evergreen
Subtober (North Atlantic Oscillation Remix)

The last 4 are on Spotify as well.

-------------------------------------------------

Blonde Redhead are much more oblique than Lush. '23' has that Cocteaus chime, but some of the other videos in the playlists are MBV/Cranes type material.

Such a wide range in that genre. Shoegaze. From the pop to the art school.

I think the Cocteau Twins were wonderful although the term shoegaze and dreampop were never used to describe them in their hey day in the 1980s. I have heard the term applied to The Jesus and Mary Chain ('Psychocandy') and My Bloody Valentine ('Loveless'). I sense a certain amount of pyschedelia, drugs and transcedence as well as an inability to dance with this sort of music.

The Pink Opaque by The Cocteau Twins, Gala by Lush and Loveless by My Bloody Valentine. Never gets old.

I mentioned The Bilinda Butchers in another thread, I can share this track here;

http://thebilindabutchers.bandcamp.c.../crystal-tears

One of my favourite songs at the moment. Will be one of my 'summer jams' - looking forward to having it accompany a sunset or two when it gets nicer.

And of course there's Washed Out and Beach House, the ultimate dreampop bands of the current age.

I've listened to Beach House a few times (Bloom and Teen Dream), not in the same league as Lush or My Bloody Valentine. If that's the current state of shoegaze music forget it. Very dull. Very unadventurous musically.

I will give Washed out a listen though.

Catherine Wheels first two albums (ferment and chrome) are worth seeking out.

Loved Ride, Chapterhouse and MBV... seeing the latter was the loudest gig I have ever witnessed, the sound was disorientating!!

These days I'd advise checking out stuff like Mogwai, A Sunny Day In Glasgow, The Engineers and sleepmakeswaves though I still really hope that Meanwhile In Communist Russia reunite at some point

Those aren't all shoegaze bands but still have that feel for creating big sounds and landscapes in their music

I love A Sunny Day in Glasgow - Shy. Very understated, nuanced, and layered.

Similar artist is Tycho:

Tycho is more keyboard gaze than shoegaze probably more on the dream pop end of things.

I love shoegaze - MBV, Ride, Slowdive, Chapterhouse etc. Good shout for Catherine Wheel as well. "Ferment" is definitely shoegaze, "Chrome" a little less so. The first Boo Radleys album, "Ichabod and I" is also very shoegaze.

As for modern equivalents I highly recommend Nothing, who have nailed the sound down really well:

If you like that kind of music you might be interested in the American band Warpaint as they remind me a lot of those 90s shoegazing bands.

I thought shoegaze was early 90s stuff. The Cocteau Twins were very much early 80s and fantastic. Another great discovery thanks to the wonderful John Peel. Dream pop? Never heard that expression before. Who tf thinks up these stupid names?

Ferment is a monumental album, with every track a classic. It's the only one that really fits into the shoegaze category though as they made an ill-advised attempt to become heavy metal after that. All their albums are worth investigating though, with Adam And Eve being their next best (in my opinion).

There had never been any such term as Dream Pop until the OP made it up

The Lush album, Gala, is definitely the one to get, as it's a compilation of all of their best songs and better than any of their regular studio albums.

p.s. This spurred me to get a copy of Gala, as the last time I had one it was on cassette. It really is a fantastic album, with all of their strongest songs in one place. I think they lost direction when then tried to become Sleeper instead.
