Late 00s v Early 10s musically
I wonder whether you prefer the late 00s or the early 10s for music? Today, by way of an Easter Monday Music Bonanza, I listened to and decided my 40 favourite songs from the last 10 years. These are as follows:-
Nos 31-40 Duran Duran:- Sunrise (04) Shania Twain:- Party for Two (04) Take That:- Greatest Day (08) Saturdays:- Issues (09) Little Boots:- New in Town (09) Pixie Lott:- Turn It Up (10) Taio Cruz/ Kylie Minogue:- Higher (11) Stooshe:- Black Heart (12) Daft Punk/ Pharrell Williams:- Get Lucky (13) Katy Perry:- Roar (13) Nos 21-30 McFly:- 5 Colours in Her Hair (04) U2:- City of Blinding Lights (05) Mark Ronson/ Daniel Merriweather:- Stop Me (07) Hard-Fi:- Suburban Knights (07) Kings of Leon:- Use Somebody (09) Gabriella Cilmi:- Hearts Don’t Lie (10) Olly Murs:- Please Don’t Let Me Go (10) Stooshe:- Slip (13) John Newman:- Love Me Again (13) Paul McCartney:- New (13) Nos 11-20 Beverley Knight:- Come As You Are (04) Oasis:- The Importance of Being Idle (05) Gwen Stefani:- Cool (05) Mika:- Love Today (07) Jennifer Hudson:- Spotlight (08) Beyonce:- Halo (09) Laura White:- You Should Have Known (09) Nicole Scherzinger:- Don’t Hold Your Breath (11) Adele:- Set Fire to the Rain (11) Olly Murs:- Dear Darling (13) Nos 2-10 Jem:- Just a Ride (05) Coldplay:- Fix You (05) Magic Numbers:- Love Me Like You (05) Texas/ Peter Kay:- Sleep (06) Red Hot Chilli Peppers:- Dani California (06) Snow Patrol:- Take Back the City (08) Joshua Radin:- Brand New Day (10) Noel Gallagher’s High-Flying Birds:- AKA What a Life (11) Matt Cardle/ Melanie C:- Loving You (13) No 1 Franz Ferdinand:- Take Me Out (04) Although Olly Murs is the most conspicuous double entry, he is beaten by Noel Gallagher who featured in 2 of my top 20 songs, having been a member of Oasis in 2005. As the early 10s were weaker on the whole than the early 00s (2013 aside), there is a song here from the late 00s that was not in my last Decade chart. Similarly some have been "promoted", especially 4 songs that are in my top 20 above but were only in my top 30 of the 00s. Stooshe's 2 entries were the only songs I got to know between Sep 11 and Mar 13 to reach my Decade charts! Kylie Minogue and Melanie C have had their first songs to make my Decade charts for 16 years, and Paul McCartney for 18 years. However, the Beatles song from 1995 Baby It's You was much older than that. When you consider that I Feel Fine from 1964 is my no 2 fave song from the 60s, this must make him my favourite long-term musician of my life! On a points basis, my ranking of years from worst to best would be 2012, 07, 08, 06, 10, 09, 11, 04, 13 and 2005. I believe I have already named 2012 as my least fave year since 1996, but 2013 my favourite since 2005. Anyway, feel free to comment on the last 10 years and to add your own favourite songs too.

On balance I'd have to say between the late 2000s and early 2010s, the late 2000s would win. A big part of that is due to the fact that there was a spike when a lot of music clicked with me during 2007 and 2008, which bumps up the average. However, by and large 2007 and 2008 were not brilliant years for music in my opinion: Mika, Rihanna, Sean Kingston, Take That and Girls Aloud offerings did naff all for me!
Looking back at the charts, 2004 was definitely the time when I started to become quite picky about new music. It's fun looking back through them because I've noted a lot of tracks I liked at the time and then went on to loathe . During most of the early 2000s, a lot of commercial 'dance' pop and American contemporary R&B really hit the nail for me, but most songs of that ilk found in today's charts just bore me senseless! I can happily listen to the stuff I liked at the beginning of the 2000s time and time again though, and in all honesty it wasn't that much better. Favourite singles from the years - I still have some of the CD singles!: 2004: Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out Keane - Somewhere Only We Know George Michael - Amazing Jamie Cullum - Frontin' Delays - Nearer than Heaven Scissor Sisters - Take Your Mama The 411 ft Ghostface Killah - On My Knees Faithless - Mass Destruction Sting - Stolen Car Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl? Prince - Cinnamon Girl Amy Winehouse - Help Yourself Teedra Moses - Be Your Girl Christina Aguilera & Nelly - Tilt Ya Head Back 2005: Jamie Scott - Searchin' Lucie Silvas - Breathe In The Chemical Brothers - Galvanize U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own Snoop Dogg ft. Pharrell - Let's Get Blown Stereophonics - Dakota KT Tunstall - Black Horse and the Cherry Tree Caesars - Jerk It Out Mylo - In My Arms Jem - Just A Ride John Legend - Ordinary People Hard-Fi - Hard to Beat Nerino Pallot - Everybody's Gone to War Joss Stone - Don't Cha Wanna Ride Gwen Stefani - Cool The Magic Numbers - Love's A Game Kate Bush - King of the Mountain Audio Bullys - I'm In Love 2006: Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats The Flamin' Lips - The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song The Zutons - Valerie The Kooks - She Moves In Her Own Way Cassie - Me and U Bodyrox ft Luciana - Yeah Yeah The Fratellis - Whistle for the Choir Madonna - Jump Lily Allen - Smile Christina Aguilera - Ain't No Other Man 2007: Amy Winehouse - You Know I'm No Good Calvin Harris - Acceptable in the 80s Groove Armada - Song for Mutya Amy Winehouse - Tears Dry On Their Own Gwen Stefani - Now That You Got It Peter, Bjorn & John ft Victoria Bergsman - Young Folks Newton Faulkner - All I Got Ida Corr vs Fedde Le Grande - Let Me Think About It Feist - 1234 Hoosiers - Goodbye Mr A Amy Macdonald - This is the Life 2008: Mystery Jets ft Laura Marling - Young Love Holly Rose - I Don't Care Vampire Weekend - A-Punk Florence and the Machine - Kiss with a Fist Adele - Hometown Glory Madonna - Miles Away Snow Patrol - Take Back The City Iglu & Hartley - In This City Jennifer Hudson - Spotlight Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal Gabriella Cilmi - Warm This Winter 2009: Kid Cudi - Day N Night Empire of the Sun - Walking on a Dream Daniel Merriweather - Change MGMT - Time to Pretend Empire of the Sun - We Are The People Noisettes - Never Forget You Kasabian - Fire Paloma Faith - New York Little Boots - New in Town Noisettes - Wild Young Hearts Calvin Harris - Ready for the Weekend Whitney Houston - Million Dollar Bill Norah Jones - Chasing Pirates Paloma Faith - Do You Want The Truth or Something Beautiful? Thank you for your detailed commentary on the last 10 years. When I looked through the last 10 years I did indeed notice quite a bit of variety from early years like 2004 and 2005. I think that had I done say a top 80 or 100, few songs would have come from recent years apart possibly from 2013. Last year did however feel like a happy fluke rather than a new beginning musically.
Anyway, some of your song choices I like in addition to those I already listed are Black Horse & the Cherry Tree, She Moves in Her Own Way, Smile, Ain't No Other Man, This is the Life, Change, Never Forget You, On a Mission, Hey Soul Sister and Locked Out of Heaven. |

mr picky here, 04-07 id call the mid 00's ! not the late.
04 and 05 were best for me, 06-14 was pretty bad apart half a dozen or so good/great tracks each year. these would include robyn - with every heartbeat gabriella cilme - nothing sweet about me tim berg - seek bromance chase and status - blind faith naughty boy - la la la (or whatever its called lol) and several others. as the op knows, ive done fav tracks per year upto 05. maybe i ought to update it, itll be interesting to see how modern years hold up against the last 50. i expect theyll be quite low as i dislike most modern musiv but there are still some all time favs (for me). |
