Have you looked in the 'deleted' folder? It's possible you're getting them somewhere else first, and your setting is "delete from the server".

It depends which client you're using on your PC/laptop, but generally just expand the email "name".

On the iPad, go into Email app/Accounts, select the email account, and that will show inbox, drafts, sent and deleted (trash) folders.

Is this a recent thing or a new iPad? Might be that you are using pop on the pc, if you download email to your pc using pop then it won't be available to your iPad vice versa. If your using multiple devices best change over to imap.

Other than that check junk and spam folders, on iPad tap mailboxes at the top left then select the relevant account from about half way down and you should see junk and spam in there

Without knowing what software you are using it's hard to tell exactly, but it will be something like this.

On PC open up your email software, probably outlook or windows mail, find your account section probably tools, account or similar in there change it from pop3 server to IMAP server if that is an option, it should be then change the server address to IMAP.virginmedia.com

SSL should be enabled and port number should be 993

There are numerous guides on virginmedia help pages telling you how to do this,

there is another option where you log into virgin webmail and change the pop settings to not delete emails when downloaded or something like that but you are better off using IMAP on all devices

That's the sort of mail which could easily be treated as spam, especially if the secretary uses a series of ccs rather than a group name. When I was with virgin (in the bad old days) spam was held for about 30 days, so you'd be best logging in to the web version and looking at the spam folder.
