Thought I'd share our article on this as it seems to have stirred up quite a passionate response in comments.


I'd like to think we'll see more from Torchwood; more from Captain Jack and more from Gwen. The more realistic side of me thinks Torchwood is dead, but I still like to keep a little hope...

Which is a shame, I would like to see another series like the first one.

I think it's true to say that Torchwood hasn't been as succesful as SJA or DW. Sarah Jane Adventures has had five series, wheras TW has had only four, the last one being far from brilliant, IMO.

Should Torchwood come back? Yes, but only if they restore the format that the show had in it's first two series. Re-build the hub, and have it set in Cardiff again. If that's not possible, then I hate to say it, but I think TW is gone for good.

Would absoloutely love to see both Jack and Gwen in DW, alongside Peter Capaldi's Doctor, sometime.

That's all I have to say on the matter, for the time being.

I think it's time to let Torchwood go and have a more Moffat-ish spin-off, although I would still quite like to see Jack Return, afterall, Jack and Torchwood aren't neccisarily mutually inclusive

It's gone the way of Firefly. There will always be some Browncoats, but not a new show.

There's no need to axe Torchwood. It just needs to go back to basics and what made it successful in the first place.

Simple as that really.

I will never let go of TW, it gave us one of the best stories in a telly programme ever in COE, if there is a glimmer of hope that one day RTD will write again, and that the BBC will make it in Wales again, then I will hold onto that.

I hate the idea of bringing it back with the hub, set in Cardiff etc. No doubt it reminds of a fonder time for the series but like it's parent show Torchwood was always about looking forward...not back.

I doubt it'll return. Miracle Day did some serious damage and I don't think anyone would risk such an unpredictable franchise - it seems strange to think the Cyberwoman, Peter Capaldi's Frobisher, and Bill Pullman's Oswald Danes all come from the same fictitious universe. Stranger still when they're supposed to exist in the same universe as The Doctor, Sarah Jane, Donna Noble, Amy Pond and Daleks. What an extremely daunting task it would be to bring Torchwood back!

The thing is that Jack and Gwen have been written into an awkward corner now. And though the show could reinvent itself with new characters, or change eras and become a 'Victorian Alien hunter' show or something similar exploring a different time for Torchwood, you must wonder what the point is in calling it Torchwood at that point when a writer could produce something better outside the constraints of the Whoniverse.

I love Torchwood, even it's uneven first series. Children of Earth is one of the best things I've seen on television. But as it stands now, particularly with years to look at the show in retrospect, Torchwood feels like it is over. Perhaps it didnt reach a tidy end, or a natural end, and definitely not a fitting end but it feels done all the same.

COE is RTDs masterpiece. Almost peerless television drama regardless of genre and fit to stand with the very best of UK and US in recent years. But I don't mourn Torchwood as COE was the least Torchwood the show ever got. I didn't much care for the original cast and the HUB and series one and two. So I don't want to see that back. But if RTD can ever find a reason to bring back Jack in another epic mini series that transcends the limits of what TW originally was then yes. Please do it. And Captain Jack is too great a creation to not be seen again. I love the character and I love Barrowmans performances. So I suppose yeah. Bring back Jack however it can happen. But I'm not fussed about seeing anymore sub Buffy Cardiff based nonsense which typified early Torchwood.

I'd like a BBC funded UK-based return, but I seriously doubt it would ever happen.
Admittedly I was never a fan of Torchwood in quite the same way as I am a fan of Doctor Who, but I think I've watched most of Series 2 and some of Series 1. Children of Earth was brilliant, but Miracle Day was a complete mess.
So I don't think I'll find it hard to let go of Torchwood as it was never close to me in the first place, but nevertheless I'd still be happy if there was a resurrection.

However, Captain Jack Harkness is without doubt one of the whoniverse's most standout characters. At the very least give him an episode alongside Capaldi as the Doctor. It's a real shame he never got to have one alongside Smith's Doctor.

It was good definitely of its time. No way would it be made now though. Children of earth was a natural finish to the series, no way should miracle day been allowed to happen. Got fond memories of season 1-3 but it is dead simple as. No way would I want it back.

Why does everyone think Torchwood has gone? I thought RTD just hasn't had time to do anymore becuase his bf/husband is really ill?

I think they made a mistake killing off all but two of the original line up, especially when one now has a family and bringing the other one back would be tricky to say the least. It doesn't exactly help that the hub (and then only remaining branch of TW) was blown up in COE either. The series has backed itself into a corner, the only way it could realistically come back, IMO, is through a reboot or a prequel of some sort.

It's a shame we never got to see Torchwood Two because that could have become the basis for a new TW series after COE, had it not been said to be disbanded. A new series set in Glasgow would have been a nice chance for the show to refresh itself, without cutting ties to the original format completely. But it wasn't to be and the more time passes since MD the less hopeful I am for a return.

^ The above Scottish based series would also appeal to the BBC's desire to have more Scottish and non-London output.
Nearby Edinburgh with its underground streets would make for some fascinating storytelling, and let's not forget that Torchwood essentially started in Scotland in Tooth and Claw

Realistically it, like many up in the air tv projects will come down to timing. If RTD feels like writing another series at a time when the network want's it and eve myles and barrowman are available then it will happen. As it stands it could come back in a year or so, or never see the light of day again. Be grateful at least that those involved, when asked, say maybe or don't know, as it offers more hope than if they were just saying no.

Obviously though, to make it worth it, it would have to be back to wales, with the series 1-3 feel, and nothing like the travesty of miracle day.

Miracle Day was truly awful, I'd rather not have Torchwood back at all than have to see it reduced to the level of cak MD was.

It would be nice to see Captain Jack back in DW occasionally though, and to see how he reacts to the Doctor having Frobisher's face.

I think we can file it under 'rested' at the moment.

But if Doctor Who can come back after 15 years, there's hope that Torchwood will come back in some form or another.

Excactly! TW won't work well at all, if it doesn't go back to being in Cardiff with a new hub (the old one being blown up in COE), and have the 13 parts back, with almost every episode with different stories linking up somehow to a big finale.

One thing I will say about TW is that I didn't think the episode 'Adam' was that good, and I didn't like the WWI episode where a young soldier found himself in 2008 by mistake. And 'Miracle Day' wasn't all that either. Too long for just one story.

I thought it was a BIG mistake Ianto, Toshiko and Owen being killed off, too.

They better hurry up or the non ageing captain jack might start looking a bit older.

It's pretty much over. After only really producing one really good series, two bad ones and one mediocre series, they aren't going to put the money in that TW would need to get it going again.

Torchwood somewhere between 1890-1910 meets the Paternoster Gang.
It could work.
As a one-off.
You could even rip Eve from her 21st century existence temporarily.

I don't think Torchwood was that good to be honest apart from some of Series 2 and the whole of series 3. If it had nothing to do with Doctor Who it would have been officially cancelled in my opinion.

And to compare it with the 16 year gap for Doctor Who isn't a suitable comparison in my opinion. Doctor Who was hugely successful especially in the 60s and early 70s and the memories of that period resulted in the show being brought back. Unless Torchwood has inspired successful writers and TV executives in the future the same thing isn't going to happen and its far from a certainty.

I agree, I think it was too many characters killed off too soon in a short space of time. Ianto should really have been kept for Miracle Day, at least killing him of in that Series would be more feasible. One of the few downsides of COE is that his death felt unnecessary and just put in for the sake of it.
