Jane kept saying it felt unreal, and I think she was trying to keep it together for Bobby.

Denise's reaction, alone, separated from the family, was very clever - they had to vary the ways the death was revealed to the characters, and it's not fair on the little boy who plays Bobby to act out such trauma (or as conviningly as an adult). It's a similar tactic to when Ian told the twins that Cindy had died - the camera at a distance and them running away, then him saying it was the hardest thing he'd ever had to do (and well done to the writer referencing that in this episode).

A mixture of emotions for Denise.. Shock and sadness for Lucy, a young girl she'd lived with suddenly dying like that out of the blue. Guilt and sympathy towards Ian because she knows she needs to leave but she can't face hurting him on top of this and she also feels even more out of place knowing that she's not the one to comfort him and that Jane has the bigger role in his life. Probably also loneliness for being on the outside yet again, having to hang the coats up and be out the way while Ian and Jane comfort the kids, yet she can't do anything about it for now.

Could her tears be guilt because she killed Lucy?

Sorry but that's way off. The scene in which she slumps herself against the door shows a mixture of grief, remorse and guilt all in one expression.

The whole point of tonight's episode was to show that everybody grieves in different ways. Denise and Jane don't break down, they hold themselves back.

This. Denise isn't really part of the family and this situation brought it out all the more.

I believe Denise was crying because as a mother, she wouldn't want to be in Ian's shoes of being told a child of their's has died, especially as her emotions were everywhere after seeing Libby for the first time in a while and how well she has done for herself.

I was recently in a situation where people would have been saying the same about me. Why isn't he crying? The point was, at the time, I wasn't crying because I had to be strong for someone else, whose grief was greater and more important than mine.

Once you've swallowed that grief, it does come back, but maybe not for some time.

Denise and Jane were both trying to be there for Ian and subsequently the kids, so maybe they felt they couldn't cry. It will hit them later.

I'd be surprised if that's the best we get from two such fantastic actresses.”

I thought they were spot on with both Jane and Denise!

Jane has always been a strong woman and she instinctively knew something was up when she and Denise waited for Ian to return. Whilst she said not to think of the worst aloud to Denise it was obvious that she had in her mind and when Ian would return confirming this she knew she had to be there for Ian. Lucy was like a daughter to her but she couldn't show the grief that a parent grieves as someone has to be strong for Ian. This much was obvious when Jane left to get Cindy and Bobby and couldn't bring herself to walk away and started crying outside. She had hidden her emotion from Ian and only when she was alone was she able to let it out, she also stayed with Cindy and Bobby after they were told and all were sobbing.

Denise on the other hand is very torn between her own turmoil and the suffocation she is feeling about not being able to leave Ian. She feels very much an outsider and with Jane being there and doing the job Denise would be doing had she not come back is difficult, she very much has evidence that she is a spare part. When Denise went into the kitchen and we saw her cry, I think that was both for Lucy and for herself.

I don't think it would've done to see both Jane and Denise turn into emotional wrecks with Ian and all three choking up over the news together.

This preview shows her crying again.

I think this also shows her current feelings towards the situation. While i think she is crying more about lucy's death than she was a week ago, i do still think the fact shes stuck with Ian has contributed to this breakdown.

I don't know what to make of Denise at the moment.
Is she crying because she is sad Lucy has been killed, is worried for Ian, or more worried she cannot leave him for the moment??

Or is it guilt because she murdered Lucy?
