I've noticed that bands don't really utilise the internet to its full potential in terms of getting themselves out there. I know specially with facebooks new terms and conditions they can only reach a small percentage of their audience. What other ways have people taken to achieve a fanbase for their band? Excluding Facebook/twitter etc.

I don't know how common it is but The Wanted had a quite long tour of schools, pubs and clubs before they released their debut single.

I think twitter is the main way people do it now though

There is Bandcamp which is the largest (I think?) 'pay what you like' site for independants

Along with slogging it around the country in pubs/clubs for years and years

What are the new terms? I've heard about them but don't know a great deal about it.

Basically with bands Facebook pages, only a small percentage of people who have 'liked' the page will see the updates from the page. With all these new adverts bands have to actually pay for all their fans to see their posts. Thieves!

I agree. Too many musicians are not utilising every tool available to them. Social media websites, Bandcamp and streaming services are all great tools if you learn how to use them properly.

There is, however, still no substitute for getting out and about with your music. Artists need to push themselves on local radio stations and they need to play in every club and dive bar they can find. Touring was the best way to build a fanbase 40 years ago and it is still the best way to build a fanbase today.

Get off the collective arse and go out and play to people...real people..in real time

It takes longer and is hard work...but it lasts.

As others have said, you have to get out there and play your songs to the masses. X-Factor have created the illusion of overnight pop king/queen makers, when its not really true. You look at any "legend" and you will also see a grueling and destructive touring history.

Bon Jovi for example, before the fame they pretty much toured non stop for about 5 years. To the point that John Bon Jovi (singer) started to let Richie sing more and was injecting steroids into his throat to get him through the touring process.

Best moves I have seen is tapping recently neglected parts of the world. Iron Maiden have continued to pull in HUGE crowds in south America (Rock in Rio etc), Metallica opened up in Russia after the wall came down, giving them a huge fanbase in that part of the world. Many of the longer lasting groups do well to gig hard and pushing their brand all over the globe.

It's an obvious one but youtube, so many people use the platform and it's easy promotion as your video automatically gets linked up to related videos which are likely to be your target market. I wish their were more official live videos on youtube, they do a lot of acoustics, but I mean more a festival or arena footage, big performances rather than just stripped back acoustic covers.

If you want a long term career in music, thsi is still the way to do it.

The touble is people still believe they can take the short cut and win a talent show on TV, it rarely works out like that!

Halestorm have just finished a sold out academy-sized tour of the UK. The first time I was them was supporting Shinedown, the second time I saw them was in a half-empty 700-capacity venue in Bristol.

The same with Black Stone Cherry, I've followed them since their first album and watched them play in bigger and bigger venues through constant touring. Last year they headlined the second stage @Download, the new album will go top 10 and they are doing an arena tour in the autumn.

It is the traditional route, and one that does take years, but it is still the most successful one for a rock band.

Interestingly the acts doing it the best all seem to be rock/metal etc--tour,and build the fanbase,a loyal fanbase. I would think a lot of these well established bands have fans from 70 to 17,unlikely in any other genre. I`ve been listening to Planet Rock recently and usually when they play a band`s music they mention where you can SEE them. They`ll be somewhere you can get to,not some diva doing three gigs on the way to Europe. This doesn`t happen too much on dance or pop oriented stations where it`s `available for download` and that`s it. With rock you`ve got the tour, the cds,the downloads, the festivals and a real sense of community. In any town or city in the UK I`m willing to bet the only really live music scene is pretty much rock/metal oriented.
