what albums can you think of that artists said they were recording but has never seen the light of day?? I can think of three:

1. Melanie B 3rd album - shes been 'working on it' since 2008 and in her reality show 'its a scary world' she was in the recording studio 'working on it' but has never been released
2. Victoria beckham 2nd album
3. jo omeara 2nd album - she said on LK today in 2008 that she was going back into the recording studio to work on a new album in January 2009 but heard nothing since

Britney's Spears - Original Doll, was supposed to come out around 2005 just before she fell pregnant, it was supposed to be her artistic peak, snippets we've heard certainly prove so anyway, the album was shelved because she suffered a nervous breakdown/depression/bipolar disorder. And since she returned to music in 2007 we've heard nothing more of it.
It's said her label wasn't liking the direction she was going in, it was supposedly too dark and mature, and wouldn't appeal to her core fanbase.
I still hope that one day it will see a release.

Amelia Lily be a fighter. I still no idea what happened to make them cancel it or if she's coming back and releasing more music?

I've read a lot about that. It's one of the biggest Britney mysteries ever. The only songs I've heard that were definitely from that album are Money Love Happiness, Mona Lisa, Ouch and Peep Show. I read somewhere Do Somethin' was supposed to be from Original Doll as well but I don't know if that's true or not. I'd say they album would have been much more personal than Britney Jean. There are a lot of conspiracies about why the album was scrapped. Some say the label didn't like the direction she was going in and others suggest it might be something to do with the Illuminati, but I think the Illuminati stuff is a load of rubbish. It would be great if it was released but I doubt they will release it. I read somewhere that the material recorded for the album was destroyed

Yeah, I know her singles didn't exactly set the world alight, but they weren't total disasters and since the album was finished anyway, they may as well have just put it out. Ironically I think it was a year ago this week that it was meant to be released. (Or at least one of the times it was meant to be released!)

Girls Can't Catch's debut. A lot of the songs leaked and the ones I've listened to have been good.

Britney Spears, Original Doll- Cancelled and deleted a few songs have leaked and there is alot of mystery surrounding it.

Prince, The Black Album- He went on instead to release Lovesexy instead I believe.

Azelia Banks, Broke With Expensive Taste- after many many pushbacks still unreleased.

Scissor sisters- Apparently deleted an entire album in between Ta-Dah and Night Work

The Ting Tings- Scrapped an entire album with a more electro feel before releasing sounds Of nowheresville Hands is the only one to survive.

Katy Perry- 2005 album to be her debut under her new stage Name Katy Perry. Produced by Glen Ballard the label didn't know how to market her so dropped her. Some songs went on to feature on her debut One Of The Boys.

Mariah Carey - Angels Advocate.
You can get half of the tracks online anyway as they leaked, but I'm glad she didn't release this. An album of remixes of songs from an album that bombed? SMH Mariah.

ABBA's 9th album. They recorded two songs for it in May 82 - Just Like That & I Am The City, left them on the shelf in the hope of returning to it in 1983. But it never happened. Just Like That still hasn't got a proper release - only LQ versions exist.

Alexandra Burke - Original 2nd album - While she was still at Syco she recorded a whole album with various top producers, but the album was shelved after she moved to RCA. Chris Brown's Don't Wake Me Up was originally on this album.

Yes that one is indeed a mystery. Only songs I know that leaked and were for it are Mona Lisa (eventually released as a B-side to Someday), Money Love Happiness, Peep Show and Ouch. I think Tell Me What You Sippin' On might have been an Original Doll song too. I have those songs I think Do Somethin' was for it as well but that was released and I also read somewhere that Break The Ice was originally intended for OD but was re-recorded for Blackout instead. I read somewhere that a lot of the material was destroyed but I also read that one of the songwriters for the album said she had some of the songs and she had heard them but she wasn't allowed to leak them for some reason Then there's the whole mystery of Rebellion. A full version is supposed to exist so why was the full version never released? Hmm...

That was SUCH a terrible name for a girl group. Way to alienate half the intended fanbase management. A shame because I remember liking one of their songs (Echo?).

It circulated on bootleg at the time and eventually got an official release.

I don't know who chose the name, but I read somewhere that the name was originally offered to The Saturdays and they rejected it. I'm glad they did.

This is a fascinating thread - thanks OP for posting. I'm not a Britney fan but am intrigued by the Original Doll release especially since she allegedly got into trouble with her record company for leaking Mona Lisa to a radio station without their permission.

There is the saga of Fiona Apple's Extraordinary Machine album - basically she worked on a number of rather avant garde pop tracks with Jon Brion but her record company were very unhappy and thought it lacked commercial appeal and it looked likely that it would never be released. However, this version of the album was widely available on the net and their were petitions from fans to release this version of the album. However, it was being re-recorded with another producer, Mike Elizondo and that was the version that was ultimately released. It's been common for fans to compare the Brion vs Elizondo releases.

Another record shrouded in mystery is KLF's Black Album - this was supposed to be a thrash metal collaboration with Extreme Noise Terror but was scrapped when the band retired suddenly in dramatic fashion by announcing that they had "now left the music business" at the Brit Awards. The track they performed at the event - a thrash version of 3 AM Eternal was the only reliable indication of what this album would have sounded like.. shame that there's not been much more info about this project made available.

The Who's Lighthouse Project was going to be their next concept album after Tommy, but it got far too complicated, and bogged down so Townshend abandoned it, and the best bits became Who's Next, one of the greatest albums ever released, so some good came out of it.

The Beatles planned an album called The Beatles Get Back, which led was another disaster, including letting film crews into recording sessions. It was supposed to be a back to basics idea, but really only confirmed the end was nigh. They abandoned it, and went back to proper basics, settled their differences temporarily, and recorded a whole load of new songs, which became Abbey Road, a fitting finale.

After they had effectively called it a day, the Get Back sessions were given to Phil Spector to sort out, and they were released as the Let It Be album.

Also her single "Do Something" was supposed to be included. But instead was put on her first greatest hits.

Would like to hear the original Glassheart from Leona. It was meant to be due in late 2011/early 2012 but some of the material was scrapped and re-worked on, leading to it being released in late 2012.

Would love to hear Eve's shelved album Here I Am. Delayed on and off for 6 years and eventually we got the rush released Lip Lock last year. But i know that album was re-worked on about 4 times before the eventual release. Eve even revealed in an interview that the song Here I Am, would be her on her own not rapping, but actually singing,
