I been reading up about Sonos and wonder if it was really any good. As it looks good and how dose it work.
Just the basic stuff I was looking at maybe getting latter in the year due to cost.
Would it stream music off my PC and work with Last FM that I use a lot.

I was able to test the Play3 and Play5 at home before deciding which to buy. Both are excellent bits of kit, I settled for the 5 because the sound was just a little more involved.

It will stream directly from ITunes on your PC, tablet or phone as well as Amazons Cloud Player. There are loads of radio stations built in including LastFM. The 5 also has a line input, not sure what the others have. There is a need for one unit to be wired direct to your router, it can be either a speaker of via the Bridge, the rest will work via Wifi. I believe Sonos are currently working on being able to do away with the wired connection and use just wifi, not sure how close to implementation that is.

It is expensive but it is a superb means of getting all your audio to one place without any fuss and clutter.

Thanks for the replay. Its the Sonos 1 or the 3 I had been looking at. The 5 is a little bit to dear for me just now and it maybe also a bit big for some of the rooms in the house.

The 3 is still very good, I did a lot of side by side testing with it and the 5 and there was not much between them, not heard the 1 as that was not available then but if you want some stereo effect then you may need two of them where as you can get away with just one 3 as there is some separation with it.

Thanks for the info. Will think about getting the 1 to start in the next month or two with and the bridge and them at the end of the year I may get the 3.

+1 for Sonos - I have the Play 3 and its plenty big enough. Just wanted to add that it appears they are looking at doing away with the need for a separate bridge which might reduce the cost of setup - explained more at the attached link

I always wanted a Sonos system but was put of by the price.

With the introduction of the Play:1 I thought I would give it a go, within a week I had already purchased a second Play:1.

It's a great piece of kit, easy to use and works with all local music (PC, NAS etc) and all of the popular streaming services. The new controller app is coming soon (in beta right now) and looks like a good update.

I'll be adding more devices when I can afford to.

I couldn't recommend it highly enough. I have a Connect in the dining room and a Playbar in the lounge.

The Playbar has the added bonus of being a wireless bridge so I can connect my Sky and YouView boxes by ethernet cable. (the Connect and Play 5 also have this).

Note about LastFM, they are/have already stopped the radio station element of the service sadlly, I used that a lot on Sonos.

Go for it but expect to buy more once you start!

Hi guys

I'm really lucky to have been given a new Play1, play5 and Soundbar from Sonos. What rooms would you recommend I use them all in? Can I use the Soundbar as a standalone speaker as well (say, in the dining room) or will I have to use that in the TV only? Thanks

Given? As in free?

No problem using the Playbar in the dining room as a standalone speaker but it is somewhat defeating the purpose of it.

I'd put the Playbar in the lounge by your TV, the Play 5 in the dining room and the Play 1 in the bedroom/

I bought a pair of play 1 to use as a stereo pair but the sound was just so good from a single unit that I ended up putting one upstairs and the other downstairs...it's that good....Its steams music from my iTunes library but I also use it with spotify...you have apps like tunein radio that you can use too..there is no need to purchase the sonos bridge now as after the recent update you don't need a connection with your router..it all works on your wifi network..really is an awesome piece of kit...the ay 1 is more than adequate to start with..

Radio stations built in?

Does this mean I can listen to my internet radio station without connecting my iPhone or iPad? If so which unit do I need

What do you mean by "connecting yout iPhone or iPad"?

The radio service on Sonos is from Tunein so anything you can get on your Tunein phone app will be available on the Sonos. You will need your phone or iPad (or laptop, PC etc) to control the system though.

I want a unit that can I can play from Internet radio, Spotify or onboard storage independent of my iPhone or iPad..

not being au fait with this kind of tech or what to search for, all I've found so far is >> this <<

If I have to get a hifi I will but I'd much prefer a portable speaker

Edit I'm not after bass, I'm after a good all round sound (80s/90s music)

I ditched Airplay for Sonos and haven't looked back.

I have a Sonos Play 1 in my bedroom and a Connect Amp driving speakers in my dinning room. They are my fav gadget in the house.

You control ALL your music inc TuneIn Radio and all other add ons via the same app on your phone, tablet or PC - no switching to apps when moving from your music to TuneIn to Spotify - it's all incorporated into the same app and it's seamless.

When listening to Spotify (requires a premium sub) or TuneIn you are selecting what you want to listen to via the app, but the music, radio, etc is not coming from your phone or tablet - the Sonos speaker is going to that service to retrieve the music or radio station.

There is a pause button on each speaker. Press it and the last thing your were playing will continue to play. You don't need your phone or tablet.

On the whole the apps are good. Sonos is easy to setup.

Other small things are great like... sleep mode. Listen to music (or in my case the radio) before you go to bed set how long before you want the Sonos to switch itself off. When the time is up the sound slowly fades. Similarly - there is an alarm function. You can select the time and what you want playing. When the "alarm" goes off - the music or radio station will slowly fade up.

I have music on a NAS, but still think it's worth paying £10 for Spotify. The only thing missing from Spotify on the Sonos is Spotify Music.

If you don't want to pay for a premium service, you can add an Airport Express to a Play 5 or Connect or Connect Amp (to their line in) and then airplay from your iDevice to the Sonos.

Any other questions then give me a shout. Send me a PM and I'll tell you how to get new Sonos kit (legally) cheaper.
