Hey is anyone from here going to the British Soap Awards if so do you have to have tickets to see the stars arrive at the British Soap Awards not for the awards itself but just to see the actors and actresses arrive and to get autographs? If anyone can help then that would be great thanks

Also does anyone think it would be a good idea to have a character with Autism in the soap played by a actor/actress who has autism? The Coker's are new maybe they could have a grand child who is 9 or older maybe an adult or a teenager that has autism and show's the affect it has on a parent ect or should Eastenders introduce a new family maybe Asian and have a character with autism in the family?

I think it's a great idea to have an autistic person in the show, it would help to educate viewers.

Yep it would and it's about every day to day things and it could win an award for it and make people aware of it and the symptoms

Maybe you should try and look on the British Soap Awards website for info or tweet the Eastenders twitter page (that is if you are on twitter). Apologies for not being of a more greater help, MG.

The autism storyline seems like a good idea for Eastenders to tackle. It would be good IMO if a autistic child was born onto the show (one of Alfie and Kat's twins perhaps), and around 12-18 months the toddler is diagnosed with autism.

I'd rather we saw an older character with the condition and how they and their family members deal with the condition, I'd find that a lot more interesting.

Ok thanks. But with the tickets can you still see the stars arrive and get autographs?

I'm not sure it doesn't state whether you can go on the red carpet this year or not, think it's just tickets to the actual show

Maybe there could be a character in their 30s who has autism and moves to the square with their parents in their 50s and Eastenders could cast a actor or actress who has serve autism in real life.

Yes, it would be a good idea and could lead to some very funny scenes, in the nicest possible way! I have two grand sons with Autism/Aspergers and life is never dull with them around!! Just one point tho, as I mentioned in a previous thread, whenever soaps have introduced a child with Downs Syndrome we don't get to see much of them or shared the ups and downs (no pun intended) of family life. Producers need to be aware from the start that the character should be seen and heard regularly and not just mentioned now and again.

Yeah I guess that would be the more ideal option. As if they went down the route like what I suggested, the writers run the high risk of the storyline becoming more about the parents than the actual autistic child itself. Like the woefully acted Down Syndrome storyline a few years back.

Would it be a good thing if the storyline was about the parents or a bad thing?

Well to an extent yes, but the autistic character should be a focal part of the storyline and be a character in their own right. Going back to the Down Syndrome storyline, it seemed to be more about Billy and Honey dealing with Janet's diagnoses and struggling to cope with it rather than Janet herself, which was inevitable because Janet was only a toddler.

For autism they could cover sleep problems, disliking being touched, tantrums, obsession, loud noises ect

maybe there could be a 11 or 12 or 13 year old that has autism or a young adult 18 and 19 or in their early 20s or a adult age 30

I'm not sure autism has been covered in soap before and I think would be a very interesting topic. I agree, I'd rather have an older character with autism with a family so we can see the affects.

Problem is, as also highlighted, some of these important issues tend to be brushed under the carpet. Look at Nancy- she had an epileptic fit- a condition which hadn't been mentioned before or after the incident!

Roy from CS is played by the actor as if he has Aspergers, although he's never been formally diagnosed onscreen . I think Tamwar could quite believably be diagnosed with Aspergers. A lot of adults are on the autistic spectrum but never actually diagnosed.

I think they should bring a young adult with autism to educate people on autism because unfortunately not many people even today know about autism.

Yes, a story line with a purpose behind it, instead of murders, unwanted pregnancies and squabbling families.

all soaps do murders and unwanted pregnancy storylines and none of them have actually done a autism storyline it could win a award at The British Soap Awards if they do it and its done really well. I would love to see Eastenders do a bulimia/anorexia storyline and a male rape storyline, a child going missing and the body being found or a child getting leukemia and a riot storyline as well like the London as well like Casualty did in 2012 but a Autism storyline is right at the top of my list first.
