Is anybody joining me to test 4G on giffgaff this week when it launches?

I believe it goes live on Wednesday, despite registering my interest I still haven't received an email yet.

I plan to add the 2GB £12 goodybag on Wednesday and then do some 3G testing, then later in the week I'll be off to some 4G areas to test 4G.

Anyone else planning to give it a trial?

I think ive found where the 4G goodybags will be

What happened to only being able to purchase the £10 4G goodybag during the trail period?

Probably not, although I spend a lot of time in areas that probably have O2 4G now.

How does the 4G work? Do they enable/disable your SIM on the 4G network based on whatever goody bag you buy?

I was wrong or they changed their minds, there is now a 2GB option as well. However you can only have 1 goodybag in a month and the maximum is 2GB I think.

They have the ability to allow you to access 4G if you buy the right goodybag, which will give you 2G, 3G, 4G. If you just buy a standard goodybag (not a 4G one) then you'll just get 2G, 3G.

There is only 1GB for £10 or 2GB for £20 on 4G, although that does come with minutes and texts.

This will be my first testing of any other 4G network other than Three, so it'll be interesting to see what it's like, especially through giffgaff's backend.

Those prices make EE look bargain basement. For £20 I could just get one of those 6GB SIMs.

I don't think you're mistaken, I recall them originally planing to release only the 1GB 4G goodybag.

They might have had a re-think as their own forum was very critical of not allowing anything more than 1GB and no more than 1 goodybag in a month. Now I come to think of it, I think they did add the extra one more recently.

When you login to their website and then go to https://giffgaff.com/buy/4g-plan it shows some 4G test text and that matches the format of some of the other goodybags. So even if the link is hidden because it is sent on email to people who registered interest in the trial you should be able to get directly to it.

Currently the page says

4G goodybags: 4G phone, SIM and software updated required. 4G coverage in select areas. Data allowances will be used for 4G and non-4G data.

Thine. You can only purchase the 1GB goodybag during the trial period.

http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/New.../td-p/12662514

The 2GB is only available once the trial has been completed.

Also bear in mind that Giff Gaff charge 2p per MB once you exceed the 1GB of data.

There's actally 3 options:

£10, includes 500MB, 250 minutes of cross-network minutes and unlimited texts

£12 2GB 250 minutes of cross-network minutes and unlimited texts

£15 same as the £12 goodybag, but with 500 minutes

It's a bit of a mess if you ask me.
People haven't been sent emails/invites for the trial.
You need to get a new SIM Card
And you can only buy the 1GB allowance goodybag.

To be honest Thine I'd recommend trying out Lyca Mobile.

For £12 you get 500 Mins/Unlimited Texts & Data (subject to 5GB fair use after which a 2G speed cap is applied).

It's a much better deal/

Especially when you're going to have to wait till November until you can use more than 1GB of data on Giff Gaff.

No, you don't understand! I already have £12.20 in giffgaff credit. I have also had a fair bit of red wine tonight

I get thousands of texts and minutes on Three and unlimited data, so I just wanted to try a different 4G network out and see how giffgaff performed during their trial + what O2's 4G coverage is like as I haven't tried any other 4G other than Three's very limited coverage.

Oh fair enough then.

I've used all 4 of the 4G networks now and haven't really noticed any substantial differences between them. Three was much better for CSFB though.

They fist of all said they would launch 4G, then it turned into a trial, then it wasnt clear how to register. The email invites or updates haven't really been clear. You can't blame them for having to issue new sim cards I guess. I did think there would be a 2GB option during the trial, so that is really unclear too.

I hasn't been the best communication, but then they wouldn't be the only ones to have had a 4G delay and poor communication! I have noticed a lack of daily posts from the same people that created merry hell when Three were in a similar situation through!

I'll let everyone know how I get on applying the goodbag and how the testing goes.

Yup, bit of a mess and quite misleading. Reminds me of Three's trial quite a lot to be honest.

Lets hope communication from networks gets better and clearer in the future.
Giff Gaff have no information about the trial apart from in their forum and blog. Nothing on the actual 4G page at all. They really need to sort that out.

There is only the 1GB option, one of the Giffgaff staff (tino or mark, as I recall) posted that they had decided to go with only the 1GB option for 6 months as a "trial". I would link to it, but there have been thousands of unhappy posts around it that would make finding it by a search very difficult and time consuming.

It offers the same minutes/texts/1GB as the £10 3G goodybag.

Well that's the one I'll be trying from Wednesday then. Thanks for that, I thought there was only 1, then I saw what I thought was conflicting information, now I know there's one!

Why would they even mention 3 different 4G options if the others aren't available till October, that's mad.

Cheers

Honestly apart from people like Thine who have credit with Giffgaff. Surely Lyca is the better choice uses same network same coverage and you get more for your money. Just can't see why anyone would want to go with Giffgaff not bashing them just seems obvious choice to me is Lyca. By Jabba's post he agrees with me as well.

confirmed by email that its 10GB and not 5GB. That was the 3G offer that was subject to 5GB.

I would also recommend using lyca to trial, giffgaff is a waste of time.

Plus Lyca doesn't suffer from the chronic congestion and low speeds of GiffGaff... Yet

Lyca probably negotiated a higher priority APN than Giffgaff which appears to be on the lowest priority possible at present.

Well I can't see the 4G goodybag option, I have had no email and there seems to be no link to buy it although others seem to have applied it.

My phone is showing as an incorrect 2G phone on the portal, what a mess!

Would anyone have the direct URL to apply the 4G goodybag as you can't call anyone to sort it out.
