Well I can't see the 4G goodybag option, I have had no email and there seems to be no link to buy it although others seem to have applied it.

My phone is showing as an incorrect 2G phone on the portal, what a mess!

Would anyone have the direct URL to apply the 4G goodybag as you can't call anyone to sort it out.

I still see it being a waste of money, what will you test with 1GB?

I'd still recommend lyca's offer which gives you a lot more room for testing.

No that page just shows some 4g text. No option to buy a goodybag.

The trial is now closed to new Giff Gaff members.

But if you signed up before 30th of April 2014 then there is an option here to sign up to the trial/buy a goodybag.

I did sign up before, I have an existing account with credit. I have a 4G phone and I have registered for the trial weeks ago - no email has been received and no 4G goodbag option shows.

There is no direct link, the advice is to send a PM to an "educator" to be added. Why they didn't just add the goodybag to the standard page for everyone is a mystery.

I contacted an agent and this was the response!

Thanks for your mail about not receiving the e-mail about the 4G trial, I have now sent your case off to our headoffice team to find out the reason why you have yet to receive an e-mail about this trial, please allow up to 5 working days to get a response from these guys.
I guess my testing when I go to a 4G area later in the week is out then. I don't think I'll bother.

Not an agent, an educator (or maybe it was a community manager), the thread is 89 pages long so it's not easy to find an individual post again. Having said that I did find this post on the last page:

Sorry that you haven't received the email or been invited to the trial. I assume that you've checked your junk folders and your news feed as well. The agents have the ability to flick the switch to turn the 4G trial on for members so you can contact them. I'll also ask our comms gal to send you another email.

Sorry about this again.

Will

They want it to be viewed as a benefit of being a member. If offers exclusivity to placate some of the very needy who frequent the community.

I have noticed a lack of daily posts from the same people that created merry hell when Three were in a similar situation through!
Funny that! In fact, it was those who are accused of being paid by Three to promote it (if only networks did that!) that have been the most vocal. Not a peep from those that seem to preach about O2 though...

Try messaging an educator.

Haha I have done that too! no luck so far, I have been given different answers. The educators just say wait for the message, the agent did come back, but said they checked with head office and the reason why I didn't get the invite was because I was showing as having a 2G phone, well it's wrong and loads of other people are saying that on the forums. It seems whatever phone you first put the sim in then that's what giffgaff think you have for life. I have had my sim in 4G compatible phones multiple times, including yesterday and today, but there's no way to update the information.

I went back to the agent with this and they just replied "well it's supposed to be fixed soon", sent me a link to more information about 4G and said to go and read that (didn't help with the issue) and closed the ticket.

Nice

Well, that pretty much sums up why I left giffgaff. A tin can network with support agents that don't have a clue about much.

It is just frustrating as I have the credit and the trial has started, some people can add the goodybag, but some can't and none of their staff can just click and fix it for you.

I didn't want this to become a giffgaff bashing thread, I just wanted to trial 4G on O2 / giffgaff and see what it is like. I'll update when I hear back anyway.

I don't know why they had to hide the option away to people invited by email, I'm still not sure why they need a 6 month long trial on a MVNO which runs largely in an infrastructure that has been running 4G for 6 months. Yes giffgaff has some of their own kit but it is strange the way they have gone about it.

but why is it so important to trial it on giffgaff when you can trial it on lyca right now?

Because he has £12 of Giff Gaff credit.

It'd cost him money + delivery time to trial Lyca for the month

Yeah I already have a giffgaff sim and credit in the account and i have a contract with Three, so I'm already paying for that. As a 4G test from an O2 point of view and a gig of data to play with I thought it would be interesting. I'm not mad on the idea of ordering a new Lyca sim and then putting credit on that when really all I want to do is activate 4G on the account I already have with credit on it and a sim sitting on the table next to me!

I think I'd be annoyed with myself throwing away more money just to test a bit of 4G on Lyca when I could do something better with it. I guess I'll just have to wait until the giffgaff issues are resolved, I'm not the only one experiencing the wrong phone showing up on the checker and that didn't get the email and can't buy it.

My view is that they should have just made it available for anyone to purchase but called it a 4G beta. As it isn't a closed trial anyway, they are just playing around making it awkward to apply the bloody thing, but in reality all customers can have it once they pull their finger out.

Why are you pushing Lyca so hardly?

GiffGaff 4G is an interesting proposition with the expansion of coverage on the O2 network I have seen locally. What I consider as secondary sites are now being equipped for 4G in an area that is well outwith the city centre of Glasgow. Usage limits may be an issue for some but the cost for the casual user looks attractive when combined with WiFi use at hone/work etc.

Ignoring the goading that some have resorted to in previous posts in this thread. The lack of attention must be making some feel a bit lonely! Ce La Vie!

Why are you pushing Lyca so hardly?
Because it would appear to be a much better deal? In fact, I'd sooner go with Tesco or Lycamobile than Giffgaff. Or, heck, even O2 direct (but only once it upgrades enough of its legacy sites to stop the problems of going from 4G to 2G and not back).

But then Giffgaff has always annoyed me, if only because when I was editor of What Mobile and running its forum, I was always having to bar people coming on to preach about how fantastic it was and, oh, slip in their affiliate link. A virtual operator that gets business by having its users spam the world. Urgh!

Still, I have to try and forget about that and remain impartial - but the this whole trial thing is every bit as bad as Three's 4G launch mess. But at least with Three it was its own network, with a roll out that was possibly behind schedule or had other technical issues. Giffgaff is doing a trial on a network that is coming up to its first birthday, and the only trial would appear to be in whatever changes it needs to make to its own billing system or managing/activating users for 4G access.

Hoist by one's own petard....... personal feelings relating to annoyance can't equate to impartiality.

Anyway....

Moving on.......

I disagree, personal feelings or opinion can be put aside in order to judge something impartially. Looking purely at giffgaff objectively it is priced higher than Lyca when you look at 4G price vs what you get. It also is in a limited trial phase where you can only have a maximum of 1GB per month of data, whereas Lyca isn't.

People do express personal opinion here and they also post facts and objective or independent data. The trick is not to mix or confuse the two I guess.

This is a forum and I post my opinions like anyone else, and I think I make it very clear when I'm giving an opinion, as well as stating things that I've done/tested for myself rather than relying on hearsay etc.

I regularly play devil's advocate to see things from different sides, but in the case of the 4G trial, I think it's fair to say it has been a mess. Likewise, it's easy to say that there are at least two other viable alternatives offering O2's 4G service without being under the veil of a trial.

Quite simple really, they use the same network (o2) but for almost the same price you get so much more on lyca (10GB 4G data on lyca and 1GB 4G data on giffgaff) its not rocket science. Plus the 3G network performs a lot better on lyca than giffgaff i have noticed since switched my backup phone.

At home i get 10Mbps on lyca 3G where as was getting below 1Mbps on giffgaff.

Even tested my friends giffgaff phone to my lyca the other day i got around 11Mbps on 3G, he got 0.66Mbps.

if i was to push any network to someone, i would highly recommend Three as its my favourite network, but in this instance lyca suits the needs of the Op better.

Well I agree lycamobile is far better then giffgaff who seem to be going down hill getting lot of negative comments all over the internet.with lyca you get more for your money on 4g and faster 3g also a call centre.
