I have never liked Ian.. he's just a selfish p***k! But in lastnights ep he was just vile! Its funny how he has no time to comfort his kids but has all the time in the world for Jane his grief suddenly stops when she's around! All he cares about is getting in to janes knickers! Erm Ian your daughter is f******g dead & Your kids need you! But hey never mind!! Poor bobby.. & I can't believe people just let him get away with how he treats the children first Cindy now bobby.. yeah he lost his daughter but there's no need to treat his other living kids the way he has been.. If I was denise Jane etc I wouldn't give a f**k I would have gave him a right slap in his face!! oooh wouldn't I love 2!

I know. I gasped when he spoke to poor Bobby like that. Poor kid. No wonder Jane left. I felt sorry for Denise at the end. She is stuck with Ian now. But to be fair to her, he hasn't let her comfort him as all he wants is Jane. I expect Denise will be pleased when it is revealed they slept together !!

The guy is grieving. I think we can cut him some slack.

Ian has never been the most likable character but under the circumstances, I think it's understandable that he's lashing out at those closest to him. I really don't think he's thinking straight.

I agree with the OP, that is no way to treat a little boy who has just lost his sister.

Blimey ... Am posting from Croatia (where it is chucking down with rain and there is nothing else to do for the moment .. ). So, has Ian slept with Jane since Lucy was killed? If yes, then surely Jane is up for as much criticism (or even more) than Ian?

Cindy isn't his child, and he has made no bones about not wanting her around long before the death.

He was cruel to Bobby. No question, but he'll get over it, his dad isn't in good shape.

Hey, I might not approve of Ian's recent behaviour but I have compassion for the poor guy because he lost his only daughter and he soon finds out she was killed, not that a random mugging gone wrong would have been any better.

grief does strange things to people so cut him some slack - yes, whilst I agree that he is being an idiot I have certainly never been in his position so I have no idea how I would cope with it - to me, he is coping with what is undoubtably the darkest moment in his life so far as best he knows how, yes he is lashing out at the people closest to him and yes, he shouldnt have said that to Bobby

I'm not saying it's right. The way he's treated Bobby (and Cindy) has been completely unfair.

However I empathise with Ian because he's just lost his daughter. Greif takes people different ways. If Ian was behaving this way for something minor, then I'd feel the OP's hate for Ian.

For me, it's hard to hate the man given what he's going through. He's lashing out. Unjustified but understandable.

I agree with those who say Ian should be cut some slack at the moment. Good grief, the poor man's daughter has just been murdered and he doesn't know how it happened or who did it. Wouldn't anyone be inclined to snap and say things they don't mean or act out of character? I've personally known grown adults who got into fist fights during times of bereavement and grief because their emotions got the best of them. I just have a lot of compassion and understanding for Ian right now.

People seem to be forgetting his breakdown last year. It looks like he could be heading down the same path. Now I don't agree with everything he's done since Lucy's death but...come on! He's just lost his daughter!

This. He's still mentally vulnerable and it wouldn't surprise if Ian does hurtle towards another mental breakdown. I'm not sure he's in full control of what he says and does at the moment and he could go one way or the other.

EDIT: But yes, it was awful watching him being horrible to Bobby

Yes they have and yes, you would think so. But if you watch the scene, there's kind of an angle from Ian that suggests he took advantage of Jane when she was upset. Obviously, it could be grief bringing the two together, as we have seen time and time again but this just seemed different and afterwards, Ian didn't feel the same remorse as Jane, he was just interested in telling Mas and Denise so they could be together - all this after his daughter has died, seems to me even in grief the selfish Ian slips through.

Ian is fair too complex a character to outright hate, in my opinion. We've seen so many facets of the man over the last 30 years and he's done many things that show him as vulnerable and human (as well as others that show him as heartless and stupid).

I didn't see his desperation with Jane as about 'getting in her knickers'; I see a devastated man who just wants to be looked after and who probably wants to rewind life to when he and Jane were together rather than to live his present situation.

He was horrible to Bobby when he said 'you're not Lucy, are you?' but it's forgivable in the circumstances. I actually think shutting Bobby away in his room (I know he's gone now) is going to do more long-term damage than a throwaway comment; children need to grieve with the family.

Ian just says the wrong thing at the wrong time and he's always been like that. He shouldn't have spoken to Bobby like that, he has now lost his biological mother and his sister. Did anyone else notice how he is 'scratching' his arm again like he did before his last breakdown? I wouldn't be surprised if he weren't going there again.
