Soaps may not always be realistic and its often thought that the characters would not act the way they are written but every now and then there is a character that is really positive and strong.

I only watch Neighbours and I'd say that the character that I'd consider as a role model, particularly to young teenage girls and girls in their twenties is Rosie Cammeniti. When she first arrives she does not easily give in to Frazer who 'shamelessly' tries to hit on her in order to win her to gain status, power and money by being married to a member of the 'notorious' cammeniti family. Although she does give in to Paul Robinson's advances she realises his true colours and realises she deserves better treatment, as well as her best friend Pepper who also gets sucked in by Paul for a while. She is a character who whilst she truly wants to be in a loving, trusting relationship, she isn't desperate and will not let her standards slip for just any man. She is patient, strong and feisty and although she is flawed as she sometimes judges people wrongly, she is certainly makes up for that in strength of character. Neighbours needs a similar character like her.

What characters would you perceive to be positive role models (past & present)?

Johnny
For young gay men who are not camp and feminine
Same with Finn in Emmerdale. They are both fun easy going guys who happen to be gay

I don't really like the idea of role models as I feel they tend to lead unreasonable expectations, but I think Johnny in EE is a pretty good, non-stereotyped depiction of a young gay guy, and Mick's positive acceptance of him (especially considering Danny Dyer's status as a 'hard man' actor) is also a good thing for a soap to be showing.

Shirley Carter. Just goes to show that if you whinge hard enough, and for long enough, you can haul yourself out of the gutter, and into taking a slice of someone elses pub with money that someone else provided.

Cain Dingle. Can do whatever the f*ck he wants and noone overly questions it and forgives him anyway. That's the dream for me.

Ray Dixon is one of the only recent Eastenders characters that I can think of who was a positive role model, I'm wary of including Johnny and Mick because they've only been there for a while but they'll be additions to the list if they continue the positive way they have been as well.

Ray was portrayed as someone who lived a rough life, but matured as he got older and decided to become a loving and stable father and I found it inspirational. I also liked the way he started training people at the boxing club to try and encourage young people to not go on the same path he had went. It's a shame the character was axed and became a bit of a more selfish character in his last few months.

Jack and Joey fit the bill. They were probably being used as wooden panelling, they were what Pam Coker was talking about the other day.

I would say Sally Fletcher. She was a very normal girl who grew up to have a very dramatic life but she always kept her cool and had a sense of normality around her . People could relate to her because she was normal.

Pat Phelan, a hard working man, never lets anyone bully him. A carer for animals (the pigeon). Such a nice bloke.

Yeah because being a dad that young is something people need to look up to on television these days.

Does it really matter he had a child so young? He's out working and trying to support his son. Age of the parent doesn't matter if the child is happy, healthy and well rounded

A million times this.

Manages to be deeply, deeply sexual yet exercises incredible restraint and compassion. Anna has never had a lunch like that in her life and she knows it. None of this tuna bake with carrots, a 3 quid bottle of drinking vinegar for Katy, and a scraggy fiver to treat herself to something nice - oh no.

With the Pheelster it's a nice bit of brie and crackers, and a fruity little vintage red. All hand prepared by P-Dog himself.

Sam Jones from Eastenders was a fantastic role model, he proved if you really wanted something, you should do what you can to obtain it. Be that, your ex lover or your sons kidney
