I have seen that Ian is getting a lot of hate on here so I would like to know if any of you were appointed Eastenders EP today would you axe or keep Ian? IMO Ian should never leave until Adam Woodyatt decided to leave or dies.

Ian slapped Lucy in 2008 did anyone hate Ian then or did she deserve that then because she had thrown a house party and wrecked the house.

Of course. He is the sole link to every era of the show. He's given so much to the show and deserves a lifetime role.

I completely agree! Axe Ian Beale? Sacrilege!

Who says that every soap character has to be likeable anyway? More often than not it's the less than perfect characters who provide all the entertainment/talking points!

I don't think I'd be fussed either way, but if he was axed it would mean none of that whiny crying he does so there is a plus.

With Ian I go through phases where I like him then I'll find him to a weasel. I've never outright hated or loved him but I wouldn't axe him he is too good to lose.

He was good, I preferred Lindsey Coulson if we're ranking parents of dead children performances...

Ian should remain part of Eastenders until the day Adam decides to quit it, I can't think of any positives that would come from axing Ian Beale and it definitely wouldn't be right based on just a few people who think that he's been acting a little extreme in his grief stricken state.

I'm not saying Ian is justified for his behaviour, what he said to Bobby was unacceptable and he was very cruel towards Cindy but it's not out of his character, and grief does make you do strange things. Ever since I started watching the show Ian has been part of it and I'd hate for that to change, his incredible performances last week has proven how excellent an asset he is for the show. I couldn't see any EP axing Ian and I'm thankful for that too.

I've never particularly liked him, but we are stuck with him whether we like him or not...as you say he's part of the furniture.

He can act and is a multi-faceted character.

Do people think it's important to keep him because he's the only original who has stuck it out? Unlike Sharon the part timer.

Also unlike Leticia (Sharon), Adam (Ian) is a brilliant actor imo. Leticia is a weak actress and I don't remember her being bad in her last stint.

My thoughts exactly. I generally don't believe there should be any sacred cows in Soap (nobody is bigger than the Show) but Ian is such a multi faceted, interesting vharacter who is such an intrinsic part of the show's mythology and history played by such a wonderful actor I can't see any way he wouldn't have a place there.

That said, if they manage to ruin the character as they have certain others (Imo - Tanya, Bianca, Kat) I might change my mind in years to come but I honestly can't imagine that happening.

So to answer the OP - keep, without a shadow of a doubt - more than any other character in the show.

It would take a very short sighted EP to axe Ian Beale. Adam Woodyatt is incredibly talented and Ian is one of those characters you can keep throwing misery at and putting him into new situations and dynamics. The Lucy storyline is an example of that - he was arguably a stale and tired character under Newman, but this has given the character purpose for another year, and a new layer to Ian that will shape him for the rest of his life.

The only outcome where I can see him leaving is if Adam quits, which is unlikely given no matter what he goes on to act in he will forever be Ian Beale.
