I understand the sentiment, the very fact that most of the threads on the first page are games seems to show we've almost entirely run out of anything interesting to discuss, which has been increasingly feeling the case for some time.
is it to much to hope the tv scheduling gods will take pity on us and reveal a surprise late July start?

Probably!
I am thinking we will have a long summer. Hopefully they will throw us a trailer or two in the next month or so to keep up entertained until the start.

They can't hurry up, unfortunately.
They won't be finished filming until late july, maybe early August. The next series is not going to be shown until September at the earliest. I've read online, that Steven Moffat said a couple of months ago, that he wants the series to be shown in September, because the kids will have gone back to school after the 6 week holiday. That's when the viewing figures should be higher. It will be the start of the Autumn, and the colder weather will gradually be arriving, so not many people will be out on Saturday evenings. Plus, it will be darker earlier, too.
We should get the first 'teaser' trailer for the series, either in July, or in August. Then a proper trailer, after that, avout two weeks before broacast.
As for minisodes? Not sure about those at this stage, but I will keep looking online to see if there is going to be any.
I thought moffat had already announced his intention to create some minisodes in the run up to new series

Wasn't there a suggestion that some upcoming summer American event might be getting an early trailer?

The San Diego Comicon would be the likely forum for such an event.
Edit: And I agree with you, there is currently less to talk about than there has been the last three years. Then, we had the 50th anniversary to look forward to, the 12 Doctor to look forward to, Torchwood's latest season (in 2011), a full schedule of DVD releases and some newly found serials. Now, we are waiting for news of any of it: of any newly found serials or episodes, of the next series or of Moffat's departure. However, there is currently nothing concrete on any of these fronts and very few releases on the docket (since nearly all of the extant material has been released).
However, the current situation is much, much better than it had to have been in 1999.

Surely it can't be too long until we get a bit of a trailer? Assuming Series 8 starts at around the end of August, that makes it 4 months away. We got a full blown Series 5 trailer about 3 months before it aired and a Series 7 Part 2 trailer also 3 months before it aired so hopefully we can expect a trailer in around June time.

There are mumblings that we shall get something at the end of May.
