I am currently away in Romania. I have roaming activated and am making calls/texts okay.

However, I am trying to use data but can only get 2G data. It appears Three only roam on a network called COSMOTE and do not work on Orange or Vodafone.

Even in the centre of Bucharest I am only able to get 2G. Is it normal for roaming to be limited to 2G only or should I be getting 3G?

That network does run a 3G network on 2100Mhz so you should be able to connect to it if you have data roaming enabled and 3G selected.

If you do a manual search you may find more than one listing for it, worth trying to see if you can see 3G on a manual search.

There may not be a 3G roaming agreement though. Which is why you're getting GSM only.

Why don't you get a Romanian SIM card and pay local rates?

The lack of ticks under Video and My3 would seem to indicate it is intentionally 2G only.

At least it's not Rhodes, where you don't even get 2G data.

It's cheaper for me to text/call the UK on Three's rates. I'm not really using it for data that often, it was more out of curiosity than anything.

Thanks. That's a surprise as I always assume local is cheaper than Three. I must check regularly.

But for internet it surely must be cheaper using a local SIM?

Maybe their 3G network is worse than Vodafone UK, who knows :P

That's a pain, i'm off to Rhodes soon and had checked that data is available in Greece on 3's website, not realising they list Rhodes separately. I was still on O2 last time I went and had no problems with data (unlike at home..!)

Are you sure it's cheaper? You don't need to be on Cosmote but Orange RO offer very cheap (inclusive) calling to international numbers. Just check here: https://www.orange.ro/prepay/oferte-...y-baza-ro.html €8 gives you 200 minutes to UK landlines and mobiles as well as the option to use 1 minute as 1 SMS and 400MB of data. Not to mention unlimited national minutes and SMS.

The added bonus with Orange is the coverage is fantastic, you'll even get it up some mountains! 3G as well!

Decided to buy an orange SIM anyway to try out Orange 4G. Got 12GB for 13 Euros which I thought was pretty good.

Mobiles are cheap in Romania for some reason, it makes us over here look very expensive. Especially when you see the service Romanians get from their networks is great as well.

Orange should be good in Bucharest, south of the Carpathians they love Vodafone, north of the Carpathians it's mostly Orange. I've never understood the split.
