Galaxy S5 - USB3 - Does it really offer faster charging?

Hi there,

I have ordered a USB3 cable to connect my phone to my PC for higher transfer of DATA, but I've read that the USB3 cable charges the phone quicker?

I was wondering if anybody has one on a mains charger and if it really does charge quicker (I've got a couple of genuine 2a Samsung mains plugs I can use and also a 2.1a USB Belkin car charger).

Just wondering if it's worth it ordering a couple more for charging in the car and also on the mains?

Also would it have any negative effect on the battery charging quicker?

Cheers, Mark.

USB3 will only help devices charge quicker when connected to a USB port on a host device, e.g. PC or laptop. This is because USB3 can supply more power than USB2.

It won't affect charging time off the mains. Samsung already uses their own proprietary system to allow far greater charging current over the USB cable than USB allows when connected to a mains charger.

Cheers for that.

I'll just stick to the one USB cable for DATA then.

Mark.

A USB 3 cable isn't going to make any difference with a charger. Look at phones and tablets that have used USB 2 cables for years with chargers that supply 1000mA or much more.

On a computer USB 2 ports supply 500mA most of the time (some laptops are under rated). USB 3 ports can supply 900mA if a USB 3 device and cable are used with it.

Might still help, if your mains charging isn't currently reaching the speeds its supposed to.

Mains chargers deliver up to 2000mA or more, however to go above the 500mA USB spec manufacturers have to use proprietary methods.

In Samsung's case this method incorporates various resistors across unused pins on the connector to determine what the charger is capable of, if the phone can't read this accurately then it defaults to "low speed" 460mA USB charging.

The problem with these resistance based ID methods is cables and connectors have their own in-built resistance. An old, worn, or long cable can throw the resistance off by enough that the phone fails to identify the charger correctly and resorts to low speed charging.
