Emmerdale HIV storyline
I thought this was supposed to be a serious storyline?

It is serious but doesn't mean it needs to be depressing.

Me too, I mean, sleeping with someone while you have HIV and not telling them, isn't that against the law or something?but they manage to turn it into a farce and make everyone involved look like idiots.

The story started off really well, it's hard to understand why they've now decided to turn it into a farce.

I'd call it tragi-comedy. On the surface, they're playing for laughs, because Val's always been funny. But under it all, you can see she's really suffering. I honestly think she's playing a blinder - she was great tonight in that last shot. I felt proper choked.

Feel really sorry for Tiny here, he's been badly tricked and hoodwinked into sleeping with a diseased old hag.
Poor bloke only wanted a bit of slap & tickle of an afternoon, he never expected this. Now he has hard men like Eric threatening him too, while he's trying to deliver bread. |

It is a shame really as this SL could have been handled so much better, we could have witnessed Eric and Val having to come to terms with her diagnosis but it all seems to have gone OTT I would like to sympathise with Val but I just can't when she treats other people with so much distain.

TBF, I can easily seeing someone newly diagnosed going off the rails in this way, I think there would be a number of responses to bad news and so this reaction is valid.
However, I used to like the character of Val but I went off her a long time ago and as such I have zero sympathy for her. I do feel sorry for Eric though because she's only ever taken the piss out of him and he doesn't really deserve this from her. I do think the standard of acting has on the whole been of good quality |

Never thought I would say this, but I am actually beginning to agree with Sprunger about the quality of writing in Emmerdale at the moment.
Maybe it because Val has been really over used in recent years and also because she comes across as such a selfish character. That I can't really care about her HIV condition. Not saying that it has to change you, but you would think that you would take stock of your life etc, but Val still does the same things and blames everyone else. Also this Barton storyline, why oh why do we need another "he's your child" storyline. Its beyond a joke and completely uncalled for. Emmerdale really needs to take stock and look at what is working and what is not. When the fiasco of the Blackburn era was happening, I actually stoped watching and to be honest I am not that far from that at the moment. |

Val swans back into Eric's life after fleeing to the Algarve, spent all of his life savings, shacked up with another man then is a complete selfish bitch to him & he still took her back. Then she discovers she has HIV, he defends her "honour" & she still behaves like a total cow & makes him feel guilty. Why doesn't Eric (and the writers) seem to remember all that she has done to him & give her a right telling-off?
She was the worst character to do such a hard-hitting storyline with as she's a selfish harridan that I have no sympathy for. |

People complain when soaps for a storyline and park it within 2 weeks of starting saying "what about so and so" or "what happened to them", Yet when a soap does a story for a while they still complain.
Just watch the dam soap and stop complaining. |

Yes, me too c&s - exactly how I see it. I'm hoping this will be the turning point for her though and she starts coming to terms with things and also realises what a diamond she's got in lovely Eric.

Exactly, yeah! Turning point is the way I'd see it as well (hopefully). This is Val in meltdown - bitchy and aggressive and insecure and predatory and nasty - specially since Eric and Diane's "indiscretion" (ahem), just when she really needed them. But I think somewhere down the line she might finally realise what's important, and what she's got, and she'll stop acting out like a strop-arse. In the mean time, I'm enjoying it. I like that she's still allowed to be funny, even in the middle of a life crisis. I'd miss my Val LOLs if she went all dreary on me, she's fabulous.
All credit to Charlie Hardwick anyway, she is indeed playing a blinder.

She is! We all know she's shallow as a puddle, selfish and self-obsessed - but so are several other characters I could name. At least Val is usually funny in her crassness, (but also heartbreakingly poignant on the occasions we are allowed to see her inner turmoil and fear). Why do people think she should turn into Mother Teresa just because she's HIV?

I don't think she should be turned into Mother Teresa but come on I would prefer to see the changes that have happened that having HIV is not a death sentence anymore that people are able to live for years now.
(Which it won't be, because heroic Eric only ever, quite reasonably, needed a bit of time to acquaint himself with the facts and generally get his head around it).

But it's been clearly shown that it's not a death sentence - even Val doesn't think that. She's just being her usual drama queen self and worrying about it being a death sentence for her sex life.

It's become a bit silly but i admire how the actress who plays Val has taken it. Val is such an overdramatic character, the way she has behaved during it all is Val all over. If Val suddenly turned different in either becoming all depressive or wasn't as crazy as she is, it would be out of character. The actress is doing a brill job but the writing is slacking at the moment.
