Yes quite sensibly they are advertising it as the way to future proof your videos.

If what ive read is correct, 4K vid can overheat the phone. No idea how long you'd have to film before that happens!

At least you can dip it in water to cool off without fear of bricking the phone

Some people can get the over temperature warning after just a few minutes. On Xda-developers.com, there seems to be some sort of competition to see who can get the longest (or shortest) times.

Interestingly, some people are finding that the phone shuts down the camera even when it isn't actually that hot. I wonder if the latest firmware is throttling things (and restricting the camera) sooner than before to avoid heat related issues. If the phone is allowed to get too hot, it can cause the chassis to warp.

A rather extreme and unlikely case for most, sure, but there are some people who have had problems - albeit more on the Z1 Compact which has a plastic back.

I'm opting to avoid the 4K video recording for the time being, or at least for long spells.

Will they? Where has that been confirmed? Have Sony officially released a statement to that affect? You're speculating at best unless you can provide a concrete source.

If you don't have a 4K tv then i don't see the point in 4K recording. Just use 1020p recording instead which is the norm. At this time 4K recording is just a way to futureproof the phone.

The reason I might record 4K now is so it's going to be seen better when I eventually get a 4K TV. And I have already uploaded a test to YouTube which I can watch at 1440p on my computer screen.

So it's a worthwhile feature and costs nothing. It certainly isn't the default video recording mode.

Not yet sure about Swiftkey .... Why the hell when I press delete a few times does the whole thing change size??? Weird.

And what's the keyboard where you just swipe your finger across roughly the right keys and it magically types the right words?”

Congratulations on the phone.

You might have to look under the settings of SwiftKey to enable that option.

It's called Flow. If you just hold down the key with 123 with the SwiftKey symbol on it that will take you into the settings and its under INPUT METHOD.

Under ADVANCED there is also a setting I like to change down to about 200ms to change the length of time you have to hold a key down for it to give you the number (or symbol) but you can play with the length that suits you.

There are so many other settings in there - I like to also have the cursor keys on the keyboard as well.

You can also change the theme of the keyboard as well.

Sorry I'm not sure about the problem with the size changing when you are pressing the delete key.

There should be some help videos on the SwiftKey site of how to use all the options here: http://www.swiftkey.net/en/

Mark.

Wow - LOVE flow!! This OS is so amazing!
Only thing bugging me at the moment is my screen goes to black if I don't touch it for a few - very few - seconds! I've looked all over Settings - battery saving etc - and can't find anything that lengthens the screen life while I'm not using it. After a couple of seconds of inactivity it just goes to sleep!

It will be in display options, screen timeout.

Go into settings -> display -> sleep and you will see options to change the timings of the screen sleep mode, you currently have it set to 15 seconds I expect.

Don't forget you can have widgets on your screen now as well

You are correct, it seems Samsung have backtracked on the 4.4 release. Shame on them.

Yes only for the lte 2gb version I think, which seems fair enough if the performance will be hit with 1gb

Why worry about the resolution of videos bur not stills? We regularly look at stills at 8mp and above on our phone screens.

One good use for 4k recording is to capture high resolution stills from it. I have seen this work really well.

You can also play back 4K video on the phone and zoom in on playback, which is a nice feature.

Future proofing a phone surely a good thing

For the screen turning off all the time there is the following app which looks to see if you are looking at the phone and it automatically keeps the screen on until you look away:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ft.eyespy.free

It seems to have good feedback but I have not used it myself as the Samsung phones have it built in.

Quite cool as you can look at the screen for ages and it will keep it on.

PHEW! Thanks so much, swordman. Don't know how I could have been so stupid not to have noticed the display and explored it! I've already done my widgets and LOVE it!
In fact I love this phone so damn much! And that pesky old learning curve is not remotely as hard as I thought it would be!

I think it is on the Z2 because I clicked on something which sounds like it has just that capability. Will give it a test run!

Yes, has copied the Samsung feature.

Settings/Display/Smart Backlight Control

Guess there was no patent in that, or maybe this will be a future court case!

Other things include a gesture to answer the phone when you pick it up and put it to your ear, and flip over to silence the ringer.

Jon, do you have the Z2? Is it your primary phone at the moment? What's your take on the phone?

I've set it up as my primary phone, and so far I'm very impressed - just as I was when I saw it at Mobile World Congress.

But I'm mindful of the fact that I'll probably want the Z3 in September!!

Speakers are great (camera seems identical to my Z1 and Z1 Compact, so it's great but not really anything new) and the noise cancelling headphones are stunning. The screen is great, but much harder to see outdoors than the Z1 in my opinion.

And the battery seems like it will never run out before I crack and put it on charge.

Not bad, not bad at all! Overall sounds like a pretty cool phone.

Is the screen/display a whole lot better than the Z1? Fits ok in the hand? Is it easy to hold or use one-handed?

I have small hands so I need both to type emails etc - doesn't bother me but I think the HTC is more comfortable to hold.
Nothing beats my Blackberry Bold (YUK) though for using one handedly in comfort!
