Hi all,

Does u900 (3G over 900mhz) impact on 2g? Reason I ask is since my local mast has been upgraded my 2g edge is fluctuating and has deteriorated.

Thank you

3G900 (on O2 anyway) uses the old EGSM frequencies and not the same frequencies that are used for 2G so the upgrade shouldn't make a difference. I've always found Edge to be useless with less throughput than GPRS.

Not sure about the Vodafone set up..

What does that mean? I thought O2's 3G 900 was 900mhz, the same as 2G?

Thanks.

Google says this

GSM is a 2G network service. GSM has few bands, i.e. PGSM900, EGSM900, 850, DCS1800 and PCS1900. These are the common few bands. EGSM is extended band from PGSM. The frequency range of PGSM and EGSM are as below.

PGSM (Primary GSM):
Uplink frequency: 890.2MHz to 914.8MHz
Downlink frequency: 935.2MHz to 959.8MHz

EGSM (Extended GSM):
Uplink frequency: 880.2MHz to 914.8MHz
Downlink frequency: 925.2MHz to 959.8MHz

So EGSM has 10Mhz extra on the lower end.

Frequency bands (e.g. 900Mhz) are subdivided further into many different individual frequencies.

3G900 operates in the same frequency band, but not on the same precise frequencies. Two things to consider are that while they should not interfere because they are not on the same frequency, because they have to remove 2G from the frequencies used for 3G, they may have had to move the previous 2G channels, which might result in lower capacity or more interference within 2G itself.

EGSM is irrelevant. While technically, 3G900 does operate on EGSM frequencies where it is used, both on O2 and Vodafone, so does 2G in other areas.
