Give him time, he's certainly made a bigger impact than both Kirkwood and Newman did combined

A couple of tweets on twitter doesn't make up the opinions of the viewing public as the same on here its minority not the majority. |

Long post ahead.
I don't think EastEnders will be unmissable long term ever again. I can certainly believe it will become unmissable for a short period of time when a hyped up storyline is beginning or ending but I can't see the momentum being maintained. I'm speaking for myself here but I've found it extremely dull and plodding for a while now. Who Killed Lucy has been a great marketing tool in getting the show positive exposure but it hasn't translated into compelling television that has me chomping at the bit to see the next episode. I'm going against the general DS soap forum consensus but despite the best efforts and intentions of the writers it still feels like yet another murder/who done it storyline to me. I also feel there's a big problem with the lack of relatable, likeable characters. DTC scored an own goal by bringing in everyman character Mick Carter and his flawed but likeable wife and kids and lumbering them with (in my opinion) one of the most horrible characters ever to set foot in Walford. There really wasn't any need for Shirley to be attached to the Carters and she and her sister are hogging all the limelight from arguably the best set of new characters to arrive on the show in years. Linda and Johnny, especially Linda, have been reduced to glorified extras and they were the Carters I liked the most. I was all set to hop on board the Carter train and see where it went but their potential so far has been squandered by the pandering to Shirley and Tina. And finally there's the Carol's cancer storyline. Now that the focus has shifted away from a woman coping with cancer and onto the histrionics of Sonia and Bianca it has lost its bite. I was prepared to give Sonia's return a chance but she's just as bad as she was when she left in 2007. She's yet another of these professional victim types who can do no wrong and it's made worse by the fact Bianca and Carol share this trait. Who is to root for in this storyline? I can't be the only one who thinks Sonia is being a complete drama queen and Bianca before her when she thought she might have the gene. There is only a chance Sonia will get cancer. A higher chance than most but she hasn't been handed a death sentence. Wouldn't a nurse be aware that the NHS are unlikely to sanction the removal of her healthy breasts? I guess she could go private but she'd want to have a pretty good argument to convince a doctor to do it. How many normal every day women are likely to a) take this drastic course of action and b) be able to afford it? I don't find this very true to life for most average women. It seems like melodrama for the sake of melodrama and like Tanya's cancer storyline before it, it comes off as scaremongering. In some ways the show has improved a lot in recent months but in other ways it doesn't feel that far away from Lorraine Newman's era. Maybe this is the best we can hope for but we've definitely had better. A lot better. |
