New ITV cop soapy drama on the way in 2015
This article was in The Sun and discussed over on the ratings thread.Apparently touted as The Bill in all but name.
Anyone like the sound of this? |

I hope it's better than the Bill. The Bill used to be good when Don Beach was in it but it got shitter as time went on. I really want this new programme to be a success.

The Bill was awesome, had some great characters - Smithy, Callum, Mark Fowler, Jack Meadows, Neil Manson, Terry, Mickey, Stevie Moss and many more.
Hope it works out. |

Where they slot it on the schedule should be interesting too.

I'd love something with crooked cops like The Shield.

This will be great! I wonder if any of The Bill actors will be in it? I'm sure they couldn't resist it

I tried posting a link there but it wouldn't copy so here's some details from an article about the new show
"ITV have announced a new series which sounds to many very much like an updated version of The Bill. The police drama was one of the channel’s longest running shows and aired on ITV1 from 1984 and 2010, before it was cancelled due to falling ratings and dwindling audience interest. However it is remembered fondly by many British TV viewers and acted as a launchpad for the career of a number of current stars in the UK television industry. Executives have insisted that their new venture is not simply a remake of the once popular show and are actively trying to distance the – as yet untitled – drama from their ‘tired’ old programme, however the show will take The Bill’s old slot and air once or twice a week straight after Coronation Street. One source told The Sun that “the new series will have the spirit of The Bill but be a new show. We want to start afresh.” The series is expected to begin later in 2015." From Unreality TV site |

Something like a UK version of Flashpoint would be good.
That way I'd actually be able to watch the episodes instead of having to hunt for them online.

Why cant ITV not just bite the bullet on this one and accept they made a massive mistake in axing The Bill in the first place because it is clear they did!
All this rubbish from a random spokesperson about how they do not want to revisit a "tired" old prgramme when in actual fact I think that is what they actually have to do in this case to make it a success. TV Execs, ITV especially, are obsessed with Demographics, money, getting the Viewers in etc, they want to create a brand and all that jazz which is why I am dumbfounded that they cannot just bring " The Bill" back, even if it is just in name because the name alone will guarantee you 5m viewers before an episode is even screened. People will watch it for the name alone and I wish ITV would realise this. They have all the power to make these decision but I often wonder how qualified they are to make such decisions, why not actually ask the Viewer what they want? Using or rebranding a name into a more modern format has proved very successful in recent years, the success of Hawaii Five O and more recently the awesome Wentworth are great examples. My idea to ITV would be if they are not going to call it "The Bill" or bring it back then there has to be some sort of little nod or link to hook people in otherwise it will just become another ITV Victim whereby it gets axed after 6 months because no one watches it. The Smoke has been axed by Sky for not being, well, London's Burning, again, the same sort of problem. Execs claim these names and shows are tired well does it not tell you something about these "tired" shows that people still watch them often on repeat? The only other thing they can do really, IMO anyway,is if the Show, if not in London, is a spin off to Corrie or Emmerdale whereby it explores the wider world beyond it's sister show yet you see the odd appearance from people from those shows ala Casualty/Holby/Holby Blue. Just Bring back the Bill and admit defeat ITV!!!! Come on then Carver, lets do this...................... |

They're damned if they do and they're damned if they don't. They obviously want a successful weekly cop show that is like The Bill at it's height that can compete with the likes of established shows like Casualty and Holby. If they bring it back as The Bill, it will be compared to the old series and if they call it something else, it'll still be compared to The Bill due to it being a soapy cop show on ITV. If they decided to go with a soapy medical drama it'd be compared with BBCs successful series. They obviously want a soap that's not a soap but can't think any further beyond tried and tested formats. Hopefully they might base this somewhere other than London so that it at least feels a bit different from The Bill.

are you sure the smoke was axed?
Shame really. Once I got over the fact it was very different to London's Burning, I started to quite enjoy it. Also probably means it'll be another decade before anyone tries to do another UK firefighter drama. |
