Hello,

I'm looking for a USB adapter for a gift. I'm not exactly sure how these things work but here goes. The person I'm buying for has two stereos, a Panasonic hifi in the kitchen and a car stereo. Both have a USB port on the outside. Is there such a thing as a bluetooth adaptor that can plug into these ports? Basically, he normally uses a red and white lead to connect his phone to the stereos for music but I thought maybe there is a better option. I'm looking to spend no more than £20 if anybody can recommend me anything like that? Thanks for reading.

To make a Bluetooth adaptor work the device with the usb port must have a sofftware driver installed. Normally this would mean a PC. It's very unlikely either of the devices you mention will have the required software

What you can get are Bluetooth adaptors to take the BT signal from the phone and output from a standard headphone socket which you could leave permanently connected to the car radio and / or the hi-fi.

I use a Samsung HS3000 Bluetooth earphones adaptor for this sort of thing, unplugging the earphones and plugging in a audio connector lead instead. But this device seems to well regarded and can be used as both transmitter or receiver

Thanks.

Does the Samsung adaptor fit into the red and white at the back of the stereo then? And it will just work like an Aux input?

Also, this might sound daft but what are the USB ports for on these stereos? I have tried my phone in it before using the USB cable but nothing happens. What audio devices can you actually use them for?

Most likely is they can be used to play back audio files copied to a usb storage device. The instructions should tell you what formats are supported (Mp3 is the most likely).

MP3 files on a USB flash drive - you can get absolutely tiny ones, I have a 16Gb one I use and it only sticks out about 5mm or so.

But it's likely a phone should work, essentially using it as a flash drive - although if you have an iPhone they tend to be weird and designed to stop you using it unless you pay Apple money

Yes, although I actually feed mine to an FM transmitter device as the work's van's radios do not have an AUX in. Means I can keep my valuable phone on me and not risk leaving it in the van when on a delivery.

Right I ended up buying this device! When it works it's great, really good sound quality but how on earth do you get it to connect? It took me a good 10 minutes last time to try and connect my phone, forever holding down the button and pressing connect on my phone. Once it's paired shoudn't it be easier to connect?

Which of the two devices do you mean? The HS3000 reconnects automatically if you go out of range then come closer again (occasionaly needs a manual reconnect for some reason).
