The reductions are usually so low that they bank on people throwing them away instead.

Apparently - some thieves put their card in and then the incorrect pin number - a ticket still comes out (so I've been told) - it looks like you've paid and have a receipt - then you calmly walk away and no alarms go off or anything.

Well /..............that's what a cashier in Morrisons told me the latest 'scam' was.

Yes I feel a bit daft bringing them back and using them when you get one for 4p or something low like that.

But you are asking us if we steal while using the self scan no?

think that happened to me this morning, scrunched up the refund ticket cos I knew I wouldn't use it, then went and bought a Cadburys Twirl for (iirc) LESS than the voucher was for - so I coulda had me a free Twirl but because I was so accustomed to binning all those £15 off your first internet-home-delivery shop vouchers I didn't twig my stupidity until 45s ago, dammit. Next time I'll hold back the Twirl until AFTER I bought the main load just in case

The idea of giving you a voucher is so that you have to come back into the store to do another shop in order to use it.

This won't necessairily work, some shops won't allow you to overtender on a coupon. If a customer comes ot the till with a milk token for £3 and their shopping costs £2.50 the till won't accept it.

I'll always remember you every single time I get annoyed at the price of something at a supermarket being a rip off!

There is also a security room with people (yes plural) monitoring the live CCTV. Plus there are the shop floor colleagues - we may look like we are just putting out tins of beans, but I saw you put that in your handbag!
Customers are also vigilant. I've had someone come up to me before at work and tip me off that a man was putting booze in a foil lined cooler bag (as not to set off the alarms). Security were informed and the man was dealt with

Because the poster wanted to pay less for their steak I'd imagine?

This sort of thing, and other little cheats (such as putting items in the bagging area VEEERY slowly and gently so they don't register) do work and it is seemingly possible to get away with them depending on the time of day and the specific store.

My local Sainsbury's local store is staffed by people who literally don't care about anything. I swear if you walked out of the front door with armfuls of stuff nobody would stop you because they'd all say 'it's not my problem', or 'we're not paid enough' etc

This happens to me and I often wonder if I correctly scanned the item, but there is no way for me to tell (not in ASDA anyway). As you said, a member of staff just resets the error without checking, so I may have accidentally stolen something.

Used Tesco's quite a lot, been 3 times when the person left and I proceded to go to that till only to find that they have not paid, speaking to the Tesco employee, she said it happens quite a bit between 7pm and 10pm, not sure what significance that time is.

I think the problem with my Tesco is they have 8 tills and only 1 tesco employee to look after them, if there is quite a lot of tills needing Alcohol approved etc.... then somebody could not pay and leave.

Not sure what happens next, they certainly just get on with what they are doing and dont appear to log anything or bring this to the attention of security.

No, never. What is the point of getting a few pennies off something, or a steak for the price of some apples? When (if caught) the alternative is so much worse.

Can you imagine the embarrassment of being marched through Sainsbury's because you tried to steal something via the self service check-out?

Like above, I have approached a self service till before, and it was asking for payment, so the previous person must have just walked off ..... I would not have the balls to do something like that!

Not that I do steal things from supermarkets, but I think you're missing the point..

You could walk out of there with say, £10 of food, having paid £2, or even nothing.. it's probably a little better than saving pennies.

Also, there's a major mismatch between who would get embarrassed by such an activity, and who would steal food. Most people who would steal food probably couldn't care less.

I can't argue with anything you have said ... but I could never personally even try it for fear of being caught. The repercussions far outweigh the benefits for me. ... I am also a coward.

You're right about those who do steal. They probably couldn't really care less about what would happen should they get caught.

i accidentally stole some hummus and possibly one or two other items and probably paid twice for some bits when i used the scan as you shop in tesco, i`d imagine it isn`t difficult to nick loads of stuff that way.

It was discussed on Radio 2 on Thursday Jeremy Vine show and one texted said ' She works in Asda and a customer used to make a peep sound of the till. Everytime he did that he was stealing a bottle of vodka.

Along with the normal machine errors, I have a feeling that the above warning can be activated by security staff who monitor the CCTV. I've had it a few times when I've scanned an item and placed it in my bag right away only to hear this or the "Please rescan the last item" error warning and then to find it registered twice on my bill, which needs the staff to correct before my carrying on.

So I do suspect a lot of the error codes are manually activated by CCTV staff who want to double-check you're not up to anything.

p.s.talking of theft, at one point everytime I returned home from ASDA I'd find I'd been been ripped off somehow, whether it was the placing of 4 pint organic milk in the normal milk section (paid 2x normal price for that one) to the multi-buy offer of sweets at 35p packet or buy 5 for £1. I scanned all 5 and somehow the machine read 4 of them so I paid an extra 40p there! I still don't know how that happened as I thought both sides of the self-service machine read weight? Which is linked to the items bar code? How come that one didn't error warning? I've bought the fishfingers under the wrong price sticker (same issue as above milk), and then you come to the lettuce and bananas that show bruises as soon as you get home, and there must be others I've forgotten.

I was once waiting so long for my booze to be authorised, the checkout timed out and just let me buy it.

Very easy I'd think. One of my kids slipped something we told them they couldn't have into the bag on the self service once. We noticed it, not the self service till, so the unexpected item in baggage area doesn't always work.

I used to just put a penny in the self service slot container in WH Smith instead of paying full price for newspapers and magazines. I think they've removed them now. I stopped as a manager marched over and stood over me putting the money in which was a £1 as I noticed him coming. Obviously I'd been rumbled and now I get my news online mostly.
