Oh come on who hasn't cheated the tills. I often put stuff through as fruit and veg and the till doesn't know any different. Or eating a Creme Egg while shopping, I often take one and just take the foil off and pop in my my mouth and eat it on the way round the store or the Pick N Mix, fill it up, eat some fudge and cola bottles and bon bons and on the way back round fill it up again and pay for it. Same with the grapes, I usually try a few before picking up a fresh punnet. We all do it.

Agreed. I would only let one of my kids eat something if it was from a fixed price thing or if it's scan as you shop and I've already weighed the grapes and scanned the price. Doesn't make a difference now because Tesco give free fruit for kids to eat during the shop now.

I have, on rare occasions when it's been very hot in the Summer, consumed a canned drink whilst shopping in the supermarket.

However, when I reach the check-out, I always put the empty can through with the rest of my shopping, explaining to the operator why the can is empty! I've never had a problem doing this.

When my wife worked for M & S 10 years ago the annual theft and loss budget for that store alone was over £2 million.

No we don't.

So don't hide your theft behind that (non)justification.

The vast majority of people will respect the trust that they are being shown by the shopkeeper, rather than 'ha ha they trust us what fools' which really does not speak well for the person taking that point of view. Our society depends on having enough of a majority of people properly observing this sort of trust and honesty and I'd rather not have all of us lumped in with having to be individually watched while we shop.

And coincidentally nominated as top ebay seller for that year

It's so easier to get away with theft on these self service tills, the people who are meant to be watching spend the whole time chatting and not looking.

Back in my store detective days you would have me watching your every move and you would be presented with any wrappers at the till and embarrassed into paying for them. If you refused or ate a wrapperless object then I would arrest you on setting foot outside the store and have the full company's CCTV system of you to back up my claim of theft.

There's only one person on even at the busiest times and they're running around. If the message comes up they just swipe their card and on to the next problem and never check. It's so easy to put anything to be weighed through as the cheapest apples etc.

I know someone who shoplifts and claims that in Asda, once you press "Finish and pay" the till will no longer weigh new items. She claims she uses this to sneak homeware or duvets into her shop, so she can return them without a receipt for store credit, and get free groceries. There isn't an Asda near me though so I have no idea whether that works! (And I don't know when she most recently tried it - she started shoplifting when signed off sick from work, now that she is working part-time she says she does it less. Maybe they have since upgraded the tills, I don't know)

Good luck returning something without a receipt.

I think that's why they offer store credit and not money. Asda's website says "On selected Asda branded items, it isn’t always necessary to have your receipt. We will refund at the current selling price and onto a gift card."

I wonder which selected Asda branded items those are? Presumably cheap items.
Tesco have a system programmed into their SST's which randomly selects customers for a service check where a staff member will scan a certain number of your goods to make sure you've done the same. I've never not scanned an item and been caught out that way, although I seem to recall that upon getting home once or twice finding something small has slipped through the net!😱 And no, I wouldn't deliberately steal either, it would not be worth the risk.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Do you know what the truth is? The truth is the store detectives don't know who to watch or what to do. You wouldn't have spotted me eating a Creme Egg or refiling my tub at the Pick N Mix nor would you have seen me eating the Seedless Grapes. Just like the self serve computers are too stupid to know the difference between red meat and fruit, they can be fooled, fooled everyday all day long and never be none the wiser.

And such is life.

I put my bag of granny smith apples through as bramleys once when I wasn't paying attention. Saved about 50p!

I couldn't deliberately steal items or put intentionally put items through at wrong lower priced items. I think the embarrassment would bother me more than the conviction. Im quite good at looking as I'm going with what I'm selecting and scanning. I'm sure I probably have unintentionally walked out with an item not paid for but I couldn't give a specific time it's happened.

Another poster has said before once you select "pay" it does stop weighing items, or at least it used to. I remember years ago when self service first started I saw somebody pay for a selection of items but steal a 4 pack of Danish pastries by adding them to their bag as they were paying for the other items.
