iPad and iPhone woes

Hi

OK. So I consider myself a techy person usually.... But.. I am very much an android boy, and I'm quite useless with apple, it doesn't make much sense to me.

Anyway my mum has an iPhone 5 and an iPad air.

She could "facetime" on her phone and asked me to set it up so she could facetime on her iPad. So I fiddled around with it and thought I set it all up.

But on the iPad it does ring if someone facetimes her... But it just says connecting and nothing happenes.... Same if she tries to make an outgoing call.....

She can still facetime fine from her iPhone tho.

Also, since doing this.... If anybody texts her from another iPhone ("imessage"?) It now only comes through to her iPad and not her phone.

Ordinary text messages from other phones go through to her iPhone and not her iPad....

What on earth is going on?

Re the iMessage issue, I would do the following:

On each device, go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. It will probably say '2 addresses'.

In that menu you'll probably see a phone number and email listed. Make sure there's a tick next to both. Underneath that, there's an option for 'start new conversations from'. I think it's best to have that as the phone number. That means even when you send iMessages from the iPad, they'll go from the phone number.

After you've done that, I would restart both devices. If that doesn't work, switch off iMessage for a minute then switch it back on, and see if that helps.

I don't use FaceTime but again, I'd try switching the service off and back on, and restarting the device.

Go to Settings > Message > Send & Receive and make sure you have the same setup on both devices for the best experience. Each device has it's own settings on which addresses it can/will use for iMessage/Facetime sessions. It's also worthwhile checking both devices are starting conversations from the same address as not to confuse other people who may not have all of your handles as contacts.

Personally I like to use my mobile number on both devices to start conversations. I also have them setup to accept conversations from my iCloud email addresses but never really use them other than for actual email.

So, what I said then?

Hopefully we're both on the right lines rather than completely wrong!
