Some excellent articles on the two baby mammoths that have recently been CT-scanned.

The preservation of Lyuba and Khroma's bodies is simply astonishing and I often wonder if we will ever find a human body from the same era preserved in the permafrost.

A digital recreation of the locomotion of one of the world's very first land predators - a tiny arachnid called a trigonotarbid.

For all those afraid of spiders this is where your nightmares really began.

One of the discoveries of the century which I recently became aware of and which the public will never see thanks to politicians, red tape and the Dakar rally.

The only complete Megalodon skeleton in the world has been left to wear away and probably be lost forever. It measures around 18 metres and would have been over 19 metres in length and 100 tons in life - by far the most formidable animal ever to live on the planet.

It was found in the Peruvian desert, in 2006 by the paleontological investigator Klaus Honninger. It and many other priceless fossil whale, shark and other prehistoric remains have been damaged or totally destroyed by the vehicles of the Dakar rally. Mt Honninger himself has also been threatened by the Colombian mafia over trying to alert the world to these fossil treasures.

It has already been damaged despite his best efforts.

A very depressing tale indeed.

Here are few pics of it.

That is a magnificent creature and l hope that there's a TV documentary about it some time to bring it to a wider audience.

Human stupidity - was it ever thus. The museum l once worked in used to have a magnificent collection of fossil marine reptiles but they were destroyed by Luftwaffe bombings in WWII along with some Thecodontosaurus remains as well.

This really does annoy me, it would be amazing to have a really good lifelike depection of feathered dinosaurs, to be honest the BBC series never really got it right for me, they didn't have the lifelike feel the Jurassic Park ones did, let's hope they do do it right for JP4.

Incredible to think this monster of a shark once existed.
If this shark had been around when they made 'Jaws', they definitely would have had to get a bigger boat!

Thanks once again for taking time to share your wonderful, fascinating, knowledge with us.

EDIT: I tried to put the last link with the gigantic tooth in bold, but I messed it up!

Thank you all so much for your kind replies.

Jzee sadly the the makers of JP4 have already stated they have no intention of ever putting feathers on their dinosaurs and the plot about an engineered mutant 'baddie' that is a mixture of creatures sounds so f*****g stupid it infuriates me.

There are no raptors either because I suspect most people now know they were totally feathered and they do not want to do that for reasons that are beyond me. They think feathered dinosaurs are not 'scary' enough - have they ever even seen eagles and what they are capable of?

And a rex weighed about 1000x more than any living bird of prey!

They seem to think the public are totally stupid but that's Hollywood for you all bloody money and no quality or originality.

They have not learned their lesson from the appalling JP3 and I hope to God Horner is not 'advising' them again - he would have people believe a T. rex would lose to a mouse.

Keyzer, you have opened my eyes to the true imagery of how T-Rex really should have looked like. It's certainly not the leathery monster portrayed by Hollywood.

I would have not known otherwise.

I did a full thread on the Tyrant reptile just after I first joined here.

She should read that as well.

Even I had never heard of these.

Two beautiful reconstructions of very large recently discovered Brachiosaur species by Nima Sassani.

Fusuisaurus zhaoi from China and Abydosaurus mcintoshi from the USA.

I really like his dinosaur skeletal restorations - they are always simple accurate and very easy on the eye.

A nice little post about the incredible size of Supersaurus vivianae's neck that also includes some very interesting speculation in the comments section about the long lost super-giant Amphicoelias fragillimus being simply a very old, very large specimen of Supersaurus.

http://svpow.com/2014/07/13/sv-pow-s...nd-diplodocus/

A gigantic Apatosaurus femur discovered recently which gives further evidence of of huge this animal could also get (and despite the tone of the article - I have already posted evidence of even larger specimens on this very thread).

For anyone who doubts we are merely highly adapted lobe-finned fish I will simply repeat my spoof post about territory on the endless Israeli - Palestinian conflict.

Humanity just keeps forever banging it's head against a huge brick wall.

Dear Sir.

I blame those bloody tetrapods nearly 400 million years ago - crawling from the ocean onto our land and breathing our air, eating our plants and drinking fresh water that rightfully belongs to us good decent invertebrate folk.

The thieving bastards.

Yours in anger.

Mr. Millipede esq.

Pneumodesmus newmani (428 million years BP).

These mega animals boggle the mind. Did they ever get slipped discs? Or die from just falling over?

Very nice, it's mind boggling to see how much bigger they were than us, of course 'we' we would've been even smaller then .

Thanks for the other t rex pics, I think I still prefer this one though .

Yeah that's a cracker.

The DVD The March of the Dinosaurs(2011) -narrated by Stephen Fry - featured a superb black feathered Albertosaurus looking incredibly menacing and the best Tyrannosaurid with plumage I have seen so far - it was slightly ahead of it's time in this respect (even though the show is aimed at children it is pretty good in my opinion).
