Bought a sony one to replace my old player which had died on me but every single dvd I played kept freezing, including unplayed dvd's so i'm taking that back and looking for a decent replacement, one that works with a scart and would be good if it was region free

Can anyone recommend one

thanks

Sony are if not the best then very very close to the top of the list of disk players.

So if you had a Sony and it wouldn't play disks then that suggests a faulty unit.

Richersounds do a number of Multi Region players - look for the letters MR after the model name

You're looking at very old technology if it needs a scart connection. You'd be better off looking in the local papers for one being offered by someone who has upgraded. There's little point in spending much money on something that is already out of date.

DVD only requires SCART, and is a perfectly valid system still - if you want HDMI then get a BD player instead, there's no point in HDMI or a DVD player (apart from the rapidly dwindling number of SCART sockets on TV's means it's handy to have a choice).

Sony are a good firm, your, presumably brand new, DVD unfortunately seems to faulty just get the shop to give you another one. Do not accept any offer of a repair.

DVD whats one of them?

If anyone was buying a DVD player id tell them to get a Blu-Ray player, ok you might not even have any BR discs but at least your future proofing

But, the OP clearly states "one that works with a scart " and AFAIK Blu-ray players do not have a SCART output

No, but most have Composite video out, which while it will work with SCART is much inferior to RGB SCART.

Why don't you buy a cheap blu-ray player? You can grab some really cheap models (less than £ 100) nowadays that will read both formats dvd and blu-ray and have upscaling.

Dont get a dvd player. Get a decent bluray player. It will play blurays, and will play dvds better than any dvd player.

60 to 100 will get you a great one.

(as others have said, i see)

May I point you both at the OP where it is clearly stated that the player must have SCART. Which the vast majority of Blu-Ray players don't have.

At best they have a Composite Video socket which would hardly do justice to a Blu-Ray disk, or a DVD for that matter.

Clearly, the op needs a new telly as well.

I got the Sony DVPSR760 a few weeks ago from Sainsburys for £40, works fine, connects via HDMI, but you can also get it with SCART, got it to replace a £15 one id bought years ago that started freezing, and not playing discs.

Well I replaced the dvd player but now I think the reason the last one was freezing wasn't the dvd player but the scart, i think the scart may have been also causing lines to appear on my tv

I would be very surprised if the SCART was responsible. Though there are pins that carry various voltages from the player to the TV to signal various operating modes. It is conceivable I suppose that a faulty SCART could affect these signals which might have an effect on the player. But not something I have ever heard of.

Normally a dodgy SCART lead causes disruption to the pictures and/or sound. But the disk keeps playing regardless.

Well I put in a dvd on the new dvd player using the old scart and it froze for a couple of seconds after 20 mins, I put in the new scart which I got with the dvd player and there wasn't a single pause for the rest of the film. However the new scart has a sound issue, horrible buzzing sound which can be heard during quiet scenes of a film. So I sent for a decent looking scart.

Or,it might be the scart socket on back of tv,if you had probs with old scart lead and new one....................Maybe a drop of switch cleaner spray on scart socket (WITH TV SWITCHED OFF),or as a first try if you dont have any and you can get your head right near it,a blloody good blow on it !!
