Bollocks. Another phone loses out because of crappy manufacturer placed junky bloatware.

Might as well root it and install a custom kitkat rom.

Correct.

Plenty of life left in the old girl through custom roms.

Indeed, stock AOSP will run just fine on 512MB RAM, making 1GB a piece of cake.

Shame again, as the HTC Desire lost out on updates as well due to the manufacturer refusing to put on a perfectly working OS onto a perfectly working device without clobbering it up with their own bloated faff. While they wouldn't even put 2.3 on the thing, the open source community managed to get 4.1 onto it just fine.

Will the S3 LTE be getting KitKat?

The article does clearly say:

"the Galaxy S3 LTE version will also get the upgrade."

In the UK though?

Sorry for not being specific.

Quite happy with 4.3 on my S3 with Three, and using 4.4 devices, there's really not much in it anyway, certainly not enough to warrant me installing a custom ROM just yet.

It was a Google I/O conference about 3 years ago where all manufacturers agreed to support devices for 18 months from launch. The S3 fell into this category, naturally things have moved forward somewhat with the launch of the S4/S5 where manufacturers are supporting hardware for upto 2 years from launch.

The hardware is over two year old now, so its no surprise it reached end of life. Root and load a custom rom or upgrade to a new device.....

Samsung can take over a year to make an OS update available for one of their phones. Supporting it for 18 months pretty much means they don't ever have to provide an update.

TBF I can't argue against that, however upgrading handsets to new Android releases Samsung has a better track record than their other Korean counterpart LG!

It's crazy that a 'high end' phone isn't supported for at least two years.

We have threads in the PC forum about computers still working after 10 years, and in real terms they probably cost less than a phone.

Especially when the majority are purchased on 2 year contracts. These manufacturers who abandon users to the likelihood of mobile malware are doing their whole industry a disservice.
The sensible action would be to issue security patches only, and not feature updates. The best course would be to copy Apple who are still updating the 4s phone released in 2011, and the S3 was released in 2012.

(FWIW, I have both iPhone and Android - Moto G).

And how many free OS version updates did those PCs get if they were using windows? None. The S3 went fromm 4.0 to 4.1 to 4.3. And it wont stop working just because it doesn't have L coming.

The US version of the S3 is getting the upgrade, or seems that only the international version isn't. I think you should get at least 2 OS updates.

Just 2 months to make a silly comment. I see you are as quick as usual.

I'm sure rather than just the silly comment, you will get round to explaining why it is strange logic.

It is interesting that the reason given for not updating is the available RAM. Considering 4.4 was designed to be more efficient and help solve the fragmentation issue, it is a little ironic.

(the statute of limitation on daft comments never expires)

Do I need to explain, really!!

The update cycle of a phone should be based on how long kidspud has owned the phone and you feel this is perfectly logical. If I was to buy say an iphone 4 or an s3 I should expect the length of expected support to be based on the day I had it new

In addition as you made the similar complaints about your Ace 2, it seems you can't have been that "disappointed" to purchase another Samsung.

Does this mean you'll probably be able to buy them very cheaply?
