Must say I've always found that whether you soak them or not they always take hours to cook........
I've stopped bothering with them Anything you make with them you can make with ordinary lentils or my favourite, dried marrowfat peas soaked overnight.......... |

I follow a Caribbean dhal recipe - you rinse the split peas, coat them in tablespoon of oil and 1/2 tea spoon of baking soda and turmeric before using them in the recipe. No soaking and always turns out lovely. Whole recipe takes 40 mins.
You might need to add more water if you don't soak, I think that's the main difference from what I've tried. |

I soak them for 10 minutes, just habit I suppose, about half an hour to cook them till lovey and tender. Certainly wouldn't soak them overnight they would be too swollen

Buy a pressure cooker - problem taken away. I use one all the time for chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans and dhal.
