Honeydew melon?

Probably not if you prefer acidic fruits

Depends on exactly how "fresh" it is. Go to some tropical countries and you can get it very, very fresh rather than something that has been packed into a coldstore for weeks.

UK fresh

We can't get them any fresher in this climate

I agree with you. The smell is just intoxicating and the taste is…wow! Pain in the ass to prepare but then again, not really as it is totally worth it.

Coming close is fresh mango. Ripe but not too ripe.

These are very sexy fruits.

Did you know, in India (and I think Sri Lanka), people sprinkle salt on fresh pineapple? This doesn't appeal to me, I think it's just wonderful without any additions.

With a decent corer, preparing a pineapple is a doddle

I think there's nothing better than a really good British summer strawberry.

I do love ice cold tinned pineapple with carnation milk though.

Strawbs are gorgeous, I am with you on that.

But…really I don't want to sound like a food snob here, this is an honest question, do you really prefer the tinned pineapple to the fresh? Because I think tinned tastes completely different and I find the texture a bit tough and chewy.

I like to get the supermarkets' super sweet varieties of pineapple (I think they are called super sweet…you know the ones which are guaranteed really tasty and sweet?). Really juicy and full of flavour.

I love the grilled pineapple served with Brazilian bbq buffet where the waiters come to your table with huge skewers of sizzling meat and slice them in front of you. The pineapples are coated with cinnamon and brown sugar then grilled to perfection.

Tinned pineapple does taste different to fresh pineapple, because anything in a tin is cooked. Everything tastes different when it's cooked to when it's raw, after all.

I like tinned pineapple and I Iike fresh pineapple.

One of the best things about SE Asia is just how fresh the fruit is. On every corner you can buy tropical fruit which was on a tree that morning,

Freshly squeezed watermelon with a very large vodka is fantastic!

Ah…ok I didn't realise tinned pineapple is cooked! Of course…it all makes sense now. I am thinking of the way tinned fruit salad tastes and yes, I am thinking of the little cubes of pear and peach and they definitely taste stewed! I am actually amazed I didn't realise this before.

Excellent, one to add to my birthday gift wish list. It has good reviews too. Looks very impressive.

I agree - it's absolutely delicious. When I go out running or cycling I love a nice bowl of cool chopped pineapple when I come home.
And it needs nothing added. Wonderfully refreshing.

Cut out the core from the empty "shell" and use it to serve an OTT cocktail or dish of some kind.
I throw them away but keep thinking its a waste

Oh that's a lovely idea! A bet a cocktail would taste great in that.

I love a ripe mango or persimmon - the flavours are beautiful. I do like pineapple but it has to be just right and that's difficult to gauge!

When I went to Sri Lanka we were given pineapple with black pepper sprinkled on it - it did taste very good

For me, doing it with a big knife is part of the fun. I like to keep each serving as one lump, to make it different to the canned variety.
