Three do offer them based on certain conditions though, you have to be on a contract excluding the 1 month and your signal level has to be poor.
The network you choose it up to you or your sister, different networks all have the pros and cons. Three's 3G/4G data geographical coverage is 30% better across the country than the likes of O2 & Vodafone, away from geographical coverage the Three's population coverage of 3G/4G is 98%, which again is much higher. A basic signal or 1 or 2 bars is usually ok for calls and texts, and most people have wifi at home for data. You'll need wifi for the TuGo style app and you'll need an internet connection for the femtocell as well. If the app uses your existing SMS app of choice then it wont be a bad alternative i guess but if it is going to be fragmenting messages over different apps then its just complicating matters. VOIP calling on the BT Smarttalk app is extremely flaky and results in many "are you there, hello, hello, are you there" conversations (this was over connections ranging from 5Mbit to 16Mbit), lets hope the Three app is much better. To be fair given the fact you think i have a sister i think i can safely say you have not read my posts in this thread, had you, you would have seen we have to place our phones in a sweet spot to get a signal downstairs and you get zero signal about 75% of the time, a constant 1 bar indicated on the phone would be more than welcome, although to be fair upstairs there are zero problems, the service is great (but I'm not resorting to living upstairs). Not bothered about data coverage at home i get a rock solid 75Mbit down 19Mbit up on my broadband, even via WiFi on my Nexus 5. |

Interesting article about network data performance published in Fed 2014. I certainly wouldn't want to depend on o2 for data using this route.

Is this the same RootMetrics who are in partnership with EE?

3's 4G coverage is nowhere close to that of Vodafone or O2's presently.

![]() ![]() I have no idea what relationship Root Metrics have with any network but if there is some arrangement to favour one particular company some evidence would be appreciated to clarify the validity of the published scores. |

It is based around the fact that if they sell the device to you, there is also a cost of managing and adding capacity to the back end servers that the device connects to, as well as an increase in support overhead in dealing with another device that you might need support with, will need replacing if it breaks etc.
The Tugo style app is on the way anyway, so hang in there for a bit until it's available. Quote:

I agree. if the customer wants to buy a box, why not just sell him one? Should not be an issue unless they are heavily subsidised and loose the company money when supplied.

A point to note if you do a lot of long distance commuting between cities but for most the big issue for the average user is what the network performance is like around their own home area and root metrics have done a lot of research into coverage in cities and towns across the UK.
Worth checking out the latest root scores for your home location here: http://www.rootmetrics.com/uk/ I've used the following rootmertrics site to compare - http://webcoveragemap.rootmetrics.com/uk/ |

In my household we currently have o2, Vodafone and Three allowing first hand comparison at home and in the city. Fortunately, the o2 contract ends in a few months and we won't be renewing based on our experience.

Did they say "you need to be on a 12 month contract"? Perhaps mention that you'd be willing to commit to one if the box sorts out the problem. In my case they "checked the signal" first before asking me to do it. (and if they do this, remember to put your phone in the worst possible spot)

Any news on the WiFi app because Three couldn't give a monkeys uncle that the signal is crap in my house, their checker says its good outdoor coverage and that unfortunately is good enough for them, anything i say seems to be simply discarded.

Have you tried to threaten that you'll leave? Three could - in theory - see how many failed/dropped calls you have to back up your claim that the signal is crap, but I guess a call centre won't have that data.
Everything should be clearer at the start of July I think. |

The reason is due to being on a one month sim only. Its always been a struggle to get one if not on a 24/12 month contract.

Im not begging them, they either want my money or they dont mate so ill give them another month and if this app isnt out ill look elsewhere, ill even go to GiffGaff then at least i'll be able to text with a slightly better chance of them working. |

I am sure Three has a range of methods to determine whether you're 'telling the truth', such as losing signal without powering down and so on - but they won't likely do that.
I fully appreciate your frustration. It's mad that you can't just buy one on the web site! After all, you will know better than Three what signal is like in your home, and no computer predications can know better. I have little to no signal in some parts of the house, downstairs. Go upstairs and you'd never know... and if I go into the loft then I get a noticeable speed increase (except it's dark and freezing or boiling up there). |

It hard to tell how many calls you have missed when there isnt a signal to get them to start with, on my battery stats my phone is spending about 50% of the time without a signal
It has always been an issue for me that a customer should have to pay for a home broadband connection and attach a box so that they can use a mobile phone which they would also have to pay for! Maybe if the mobile provider offered a home broadband discount that would be worth considering but why should a customer pay full price for one service to make good another which is poor? That applies to all mobile networks and not just the one in question. The usual advice applies...... get some feedback from others about what works well and test the most attractive option with a free PAYG SIM. There are loads of one month SIM deals and many have recently been refreshed so a good time to explore what is on offer. Happy hunting and hopefully you can enjoy a reliable mobile service that does not depend on having to provide a broadband connection for home coverage. |

If you've got an iPhone 4S or newer model, iOS 8 (public release Sept/Oct) will have wifi calling... here's hoping Three UK support this feature! Anyone in the know heard anything about this?

If you are having as much difficulty and require a picocell perhaps a better alternative might be to select an alternative network that has stable and reliable coverage at your home location.

Happy hunting and hopefully you can enjoy a reliable mobile service that does not depend on having to provide a broadband connection for home coverage. "Ah but you are paying twice!", well let's see. SMS uses such little data as to be a rounding error, voice uses around 1MB/minute give or take (equivalent to streaming radio, which passes the sanity test too) and data is handled by WiFi. So my costs and the 'burden' of this device are minimal, but they mean I enjoy a good service at home. I use about 5GB of mobile data per month so my alternative is giffgaff. I'll take the home signal box! As for The Sack, try calling back and offering to contract for 12 months for them to reconsider? I suppose you could weigh up any extra spend against the money you were willing to spend on buying the box up front...? |
