Ah, so this is what Tarja is up to now

I'm not a fan, I don't think it works, the metal elements are too vague. It's just like watching an Opera with a slightly out of place drum beat.

Babymetal are the next revolution in music

"Rock" drums and classical music rarely work. Not being a musician I don't know why, but the beat sounds too rigid and mechanical.

I think the combination works brilliantly well, just not in this instance.

I think it works best when there are elements of both. I can think of a lot of music I like that mixes classical music elements with metal, both can be intense and heavy in different ways, so they gel really well.

When it's just full blown opera though with rock drums seemingly thrown in as an afterthought, I think it can sound jarring. More effort is needed.

By "classical" I mean the layman's definition of classical - orchestral music from the 17th-19th centuries, which is the music most often messed up by adding rock drums. There's something about the rythms of "classical" music that doesn't benefit from ostentatious drumming like in that video; instead of making it sound more exciting it makes it sound more mechanical.

Modern music composed for rock instruments and orchestra is doubtless a different story.

This actually sounds very weak.

There are far better, more revolutionary exchanges between Classical and Rock music from :

The prog rock era - ELP's version of Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at a Exhibition'

Or the modern symphonic metal Nightwish's 'Amaranth' for example.

Or modern classical music informed by metal and hip hop like Karl Jenkins 'Des Irae'(Requiem)

The last one is how you really rock with classical music.

Agree with first bit about Opera.
Not sure if Babymetal is the future just a possible future?,

Not very good I'm afraid. Classical music is supposed to vary in speed and volume to convey mood. When you add a rigid drum beat to it it sounds constrained and lacking in depth.

The Scorpions and Doro Pesch both did concerts with philharmonic orchestras playing their rock/metal back catalogue and it was very good.
