Eurovision has clearly modernised and become very commercial : those sales figures speak for themselves (especially when they're charting in a market that is usually very hostile towards Eurovision).

What songs are these?

I don't usually like to look at the chart as the dirge (Rihanna, 1D, Pitbull) depresses me.

The entry from the Netherlands (The Common Linnets) is #9, from Austria (Conchita Wurst, the winner) is #17, from the UK (Molly Smitten Downes) is #23 and from Sweden (Sanna Nielsen) is #40.

I heard a little of the Radio 1 chart show today, for the first time in probably 25 years. I was appalled at the amount of mindless chat and filler in the show: when I was a Radio 1 listener, the chart show was just back-to-back music.

Maybe I'm showing my age, but the four Eurovison songs are pretty much the best of all the songs I heard on the chart show today.

No disrespect to Conchita as that song is good but I think this Netherlands song has won out there in the real world of the commercial national charts.

Eurovision is usually good at getting the order right however it would appear the Dutch track in this case has done better. Their album has also gone in at #40 on the UK album charts whereas albums by the others don't appear to have charted across Europe just the Eurovision singles.

I think the Dutch entry was by far and away the best "song" in this year's Contest. Conchita was able to trump them with an eye catching performance and the gimmick of the beard, but at least The Common Linnets have the satisfaction of knowing they have the big commercial hit this year.

The only other Year that there were 4 ESC Entries in the UK Top 40 was in 1974.

The 2014 Contest will not see 4 of the Entries reach the UK Top 11, but it is the
only time since 1974 that as many as 4 have reached the UK Top 40.

1974

A) ABBA - Waterloo - 1st - No.1 (Sweden)
B) Gigliola Cinquetti - Go (Si ) - 2nd - No.8 (Italy) @@@
C) Mouth And MacNeal - I See A Star - 3rd - No.8 (The Netherlands)
D) Olivia Newton-John - Long Live Love - 4th - No.11 (UK)

@@@ = Gigliola Won the 1964 ESC

I listen to the chart occasionally and I agree that the show suffers from inane chatter which extends to the star 'chums' or guest artists who make it into the studio. I thought this in some way was a reflection of the social media universe that teenagers (and artists) now inhabit?

Maybe I'm showing my age, but the four Eurovison songs are pretty much the best of all the songs I heard on the chart show today.
I don't think the four Eurovision songs were quite the best but they held their own with the rest of the chart music. Admittedly the Dutch song has a modern country feel and didn't sound as generic as most of the pop/dance songs in the chart did. With much of the pop/dance music it is often not easy to distinguish between the jingles and the the track!

On the other hand the Paloma Faith song though retro sounding has a good vocal and the Rita Ora song is good pop. In fact most of the chart music seems to be produced in such a way that it's difficult to label anything particularly bad or particularly good. That's probably testimony to modern electronic production technology and advanced marketing techniques. The chart has a feel that anything interesting or controversial has been filtered out and this is what we are left with.

Listening to Eurovision last week I felt there was no longer a gulf between UK pop music and many of the Euro songs. I used to feel that the music from these islands was better than most of the music of Europe and Eurovision in particular. That we (along with the US) set the standards particularly in rock, pop and dance but I don't think the gulf is as great and Eurovision no longer sounds as daft as it used to.

Having said that the dominant forces in pop music are still from North America (Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Gaga) and the UK ( 1D, Coldplay, Adele) or is this all about to change?

Although the Top 4 ESC Finalists were Top 11 UK Hits in 1974, there was never a
Week when all 4 were in the Top 40 at the same time. In the Download Era a Single
does not need to be in UK Stores to be a Hit. In 1974 they could only be Hits if they
were in UK Stores. It took a few Weeks for all 4 Entries to be in the Shops at the same
time.

They were all in the Top 50 on W/E 4th May - ABBA at No.1, Mouth And MacNeal at
No.43, Gigliola at No.46, & Olivia Newton-John at No.49. As Olivia's was the UK Entry
it had already been in the Top 50 for 8 Weeks by then. Its No.49 Position was its final
UK Chart Week.

The remaining 3 ESC Hits from 1974 were first in the Top 40 together on W/E 18th
May - ABBA at No.2, Gigliola at No.22, & Mouth And MacNeal at No.29.

They never managed to be in the Top 10 together, but they were all in the Top 20
at the same time on W/E 25th May - ABBA at No.6, Gigliola at No.16, & Mouth And
MacNeal at No.18. And again on W/E 1st June - Gigliola at No.8, Mouth And MacNeal
at No.12, & ABBA at No.15.

So W/E 24th May 2014 is the first time that as many as 4 ESC Entries have been in
the UK Top 40 at the same time.

It certainly shows that Eurovision has come full circle again and is very commercial. 13 Eurovision entries in the UK top 100 is hugely impressive (that's a full 50% of the songs that took part in last week's final).

It may have escaped people's attention but the Contest has really modernised in the last five years or so. Fewer and fewer novelty and joke acts, and many countries are entering fresh and contemporary songs.

Not quite 50% of the final though, because the occ are counting Emmelie's Rainmaker theme tune that's a bonus track on the Eurovision album, as one of the 13.
