I had a Philips 42" flatscreen for about 6 years, which I never had any problems with.
I recently upgraded to an LG smart TV which I was really pleased with, until summer arrived!! My old Philips had a matt black screen and could be viewed in any conditions. The new one has a black gloss screen which reflects every bit of light in the room, making daytime viewing almost impossible on darker scenes.I looked around a few showrooms and found that virtually all new models are the same.
Being retired I often watch a film in the afternoon,so looks like I'll have to buy some blackout curtains!

is this, by any chance, a plasma display?
Glossy, highly reflective, screens are IMHO the major criticisms of plasma displays although the are advantages too.

No, it's an LED. I must admit though, the gloss screen does give a lot more depth to the picture, but the reflection of the room is always in the background on darker areas.

I had to return a Samsung LCD myself because of its insanely reflective screen coating - far worse than a CRT - and I exchanged it for a Panasonic 3D plasma which is the least reflective screen I have ever owned.

While plasma manufacturers worked hard to reduce the reflectiveness of their screens (well Panasonic did anyway), LCD manufacturers have gone in the other direction - as evidenced by pretty much every laptop display on the market.

Judging by this unboxing video, the samsung f7000 has a similar gloss / sheen to that of a ipad 2 or something - I find using a ipad fine for video - just turn the brightness up

Are glossy screens more child proof?

I have an LG TV which I love except as you say for the high gloss screen! I have the curtains drawn or blinds down if it is daytime (and it is staying light for much longer of course). This solves the problem. I can never understand why the mirrored surfaces / screens on phones and the like..a real pain
