I know she's gone now (well almost) but does anyone else think the character of Lucy Beale has been completely reinvented ? Unless I've dreamt it, Lucy used to be a hateful, nasty, spiteful little moo who despised her father and everyone else who tried to help her. She was pregnant and living in a drug den, rescued by Jane and Ian (whom she then shot !), a thoroughly awful child, but for a long time now, and especially with the current storyline, she's almost achieved sainthood with absolutely no reference made to her past. I know it's a soap but its almost as if they have completely obliterated her previous character

It's called plot-driven storylines; it is effectively what EE 2.0 does - as opposed to character-driven storylines.

Essentially the plot determines the characterisation rather than the characterisation determining the plot.

Usually a sign of lazy writing.

She was taking cocaine and sleeping with a much older man, as well as another guy she'd just met, just before she died. Not long before that she was stealing money from Janine's business and being awful to Billy. Hardly a saint.

And now, hardly anyone is going to focus on the bad stuff because that's what happens when people die, especially young people. Their image suddenly emerges glittering and untarnished, because focusing on the negative stuff makes dealing with someone's death more complicated. It's very true to life.

While it's understandable that people will publicly show their sympathies for Ian, all this recent talk of Lucy as 'such a lovely girl' is complete rubbish. Lucy was never nice. She was petulant, disrespectful and rude. But all of a sudden the Square can't live without her.

No strictly true. When Lola organised the get together so they could remember Lucy there was that awkward scene where Whitney said she couldn't say anything nice about her. So all sides are being reflected.

At the end of the day Ian has lost his daughter and Peter his twin. So people showing respect is for them more than anything.

Sainthood?

She's being portrayed as a coke head slag.

She didn't shoot Jane, Steven did. He's far worse than her, he also tried to suffocate Pat!

Lucy isn't the worst case of character re-invention that we have seen.

It's like when you watch the news and someone has died, they are always described in a positive way. They never say Maude Smith was stabbed tragically on Wednesday. She was a snarky old bitch who was always poking her nose in other peoples business and deserved what she got. They would say something like Maude Smith was a lovely person who was well respected in the community. It's just life basically.

Besides we are seeing it mainly from Ian and Peters point of view, they would be inclined to remember the positive things. And most people probably don't know that she was taking drugs, nor that she was sleeping with Max. I don't think her stealing from Janine was common knowledge either.

I always how Yolande was changed from quite a positive bubbly person when she arrived to an absolute moody bitch when she left.

I didn't think Lucy would be hated for stealing from Janine. Given all that Janine has got away with, I thought it was karma.
