I think it is simply enforcing its existing T&C's possibly due people ignoring them. For example some people brag about using hundreds of GB's of data tethering on PAYG and that's also against its T&C's so this has probably triggered enforcement.

It is quite odd that Three doesn't want you using unlimited data on a tablet, but I guess the reasoning is (was) that you might want to stream a lot more video on a tablet, and therefore consume much more data than you would on a phone. In other words, Three originally assumed that most people getting AYCE data wouldn't actually need or want to use that much (the same logic for other networks, which is perhaps why Giffgaff is now having to use multiple tricks to cut down on data usage for everyone).
Now that phones have 5 inch screens and higher, it's even more nonsensical as I can, and do, stream loads of video on my smartphone - Sky Go, iPlayer, Netflix etc. But, logical or not, Three doesn't let you use a SIM in a tablet unless it's a mobile broadband SIM/tariff and with a fixed amount of data. |

Speaking to a guy in Customer Resolutions today, he told me that in the past it wasn't a problem so the T&Cs must have changed. No doubt this is happening because some people have taken the piss on this plan and now others are paying the price.

It's been in the terms and conditions since 2010 when the one plan first came out. It's just that it hasn't been enforced on everyone. Three have started enforcing it properly recently because they have invested in the tech to have the T&C enforced. At the end of the day the T&C have always said it can only be used in a phone so you can't get mad for breaking the T&C. It's like renting a house that says you can't keep pets (except you weren't told) and after keeping a pet for years the landlord finds out and then kicks you out. Weird example I know but it's late and that was the only thing i could think of. |

I'll allow it though. Thanks for that.
You said Three have started to enforce it. Does that mean people were given warnings, or is just people staying up to date with what's going on? |

Then just tether it to tablet to use via Wi-Fi. Two birds with one stone. You get a working tablet again plus you can use the phone as an actual phone for calls/texts etc... Quote:

No, they are not. Three has it's own 4G network.

I have a Moto G arriving tomorrow. I'll tether until I get broadband sorted at my new place and on the phone until the LG G3 comes out.
Thanks for all your help |

It's not a network share in the literal sense. |

Made my evening to see that someone is now trying to 'prove' that Three just runs on EE's network, like an MVNO.

I'll also 5th or 6th this. EE & THREE 4G networks are separate. Separate spectrum, separate core network, separate cabinets, separate network management.
Sites are the same, masts are the same, backhaul the same but that's it, tiny amount of what a network is made up of. Each network have full control of their own network. That is not a MVNO! |

It is very clear, those plans are for phones only. They don't allow tablets on them as has been discussed here quite a bit.
Apologies OP, but if you look on Three's website and terms it does tell you this. It would not be locked to 3 when you put the 3 mobile phone SIM in the iPad, so 3 would not even know a tablet is being used. |

What if you bought a SIM free iPad out of Amazon and used a 3 mobile phone SIM on it rather than buying the iPad at 3?
