OP you do realise just how many of their hits and album material were covers? When we look back at the annals of music history and it's development, Westlife have contributed absolutely nothing!

Their main contribution seems to have been providing easy present choices for older female relatives.

Oh please, so what? Michael Buble has even more covers and yet he is adored by so many, having sold out concerts all the time and selling millions of album copies.

Who is talking about contribution here? You do realize they are a boyband after all, right? So, yes - like it or not, in that particular department they will be remembered thanks to so many albums/singles sold and achievements (breaking records)
But of course no one will compare them to other greats like The Beatles, like they are doing with 1D right now, by the way...

I'm sure you don't care about this, but 90% of the time, they didn't want to do covers, it was all forced by Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh. That they were stupid for sticking with Syco for so long is a different matter, but then again, if you argue too much, the manager will just drop you. Boyband is a huge machine and you are controlled most of the time - that is sad, but true.

And you know what - say what you want, but their You Raise Me Up rendition is far more popular than any other, out of all 200 versions - also, I hear their Uptwon Girl more on the radio and TV than Billy Joels.

Besides that, their hits like World Of Our Own, Flying Without Wings or When You're Looking Like That are pretty well known and will probably be remembered in the pop songs department, just like Take That's Back For Good is.

I couldn't agree with you more here. I really did like all of thier singles around those years before they went into the dreary granny-aimed-at crud.

I do love a good cheesy pop ballad (when I'm very much alone might I add) and they did them well in the first part of thier career. I liked some of thier uptempo stuff too...Bop bop baby is a cracking little tune.

very well said...

flying without wings, one of the best boyband songs of all time, no doubt! sung and covered also by american idol winner before

world of our own - absolutely westlife hit, song to be remembered as a great westlife song... also it was always mentioned by some new boybands today as their favorite..

when you're looking like that - of course! a great great up beat song, still hear this in our local radios

SAFE - alsways used as background music in BGT AND X FACTOR

swear it again, my love, what makes a man and a lot more

you raise me up and uptown girl, - two of the best covers always better than the original, on my own opinion.

Personally I don't want a comeback from them they are a band who did well for their time but are also very much of their time a lot of the music and covers already sounds dated and are largely forgotten in the UK now in terms of any of their songs getting played in the media.
It's unlikely a band would get away with that repeated formula given the era of downloads as opposed to cd singles today. I echo what many have said though between 99 and 02 they were ok, nothing more nothing less.
However that said I think if they did come back it would be more along the lines of Boyzone as opposed to Take That.

They could in time do tours put out albums etc but they would sell a lot less than their peak years maybe. I don't think they will re-peak in popularity and sell millions Worldwide with an album.

I'm not convinced speaking about the UK here that there would be a hype to them reforming in the future. Remembering their split it was very underwhelming the reaction especially in the media however for the most part the majority of reports/social media suggested this was long overdue.

A group comes back the way they left and Westlife were on the decline the type of reunion and reaction I think you're hoping for would more likely have happened if they all went solo when Bryan did then came back around now after solo careers and ending Westlife at the top.
However this is no guarantee as Boyzone had a successful greatest hits to finish first time around and have done well in the sense they can tour and their two studio albums have gone platinum and gold in the UK as opposed to being multi platinum. This is what I think would likely be the case with a Westlife reunion but who knows.

It would like an band be nice for the diehard fans if they came back though.

I don't know about that - I think that photo thats been circling on the internet is actually a photo taken before the concert began. So who knows, I presume they did sell out otherwise they wouldn't add a 3rd concert that they are doing today.

It's ridiculous! I don't think any up and coming musicians in 20 years time will say their greatest musical influence was Westlife.

you might be right.. but at least i believe there will be ordinary people all over the world who could say they were inspired by westlife .. inspiration in many ways..

that's the objective of music after all... for sure there will be some

I just like to add this - again, why mention influence when talkking about boybands anyway? The same thing can be said about Backstreet Boys, Take That or Nysnc - they also won't influence anyone.

BUT, these boybands, including Westlife actually can influence other boybands - I remember 1D saying shortly after X Factor that they admire Westlife, the same as Westlife always say they look up to Backstreet Boys.

All I'm saying is, Westlife did make the name of themselves in a boyband market whether someone likes that or not, they will be remembered alongside BSB, TT and Nsync - everything they achieved can't be denies.

they probably will either in 2018 [10yrs since they started] or In 2021 [10yrs since they split]

Yeah, you are definitely right - I think 2018 is very likely because all of them would by then experience solo careers and I don't think any of them will become major solo artists. Mark has a really potential but who knows nowadays - but even if he becomes most successful, I'm sure he would love to be in Westlife again since I always had a feeling he was the one who was the most against splitting in the first place.

this is so true! as if other same bands were taken as influence by other artists nowadays..

i also remember lead vocalist of hanson, when he toured in my country two years ago, he was asked in an interview - WESTLIFE OR BACKSTREET BOYS, he chose westlife
