Shirley was a fully-fleshed character for seven years prior to Mick's arrival. It has always been established by her and many others that she had three children - Jimbo, Carly and Dean. There was never any hint whatsoever to a fourth child (aka Mick).

Did Heather know about it? Did Kevin know about it?

I don't buy this twist, purely because Shirley has been in the show for so long now, and this has just come out of nowhere. This is a very cheap and unrealistic retcon

This is SO true.

Part of me found it cringeworthy that her character, having been established for ages, supposedly had a brother, niece and nephews. But as family's go, it's not unrealistic to lose contact with siblings. HOWEVER, a secret kid, daughter in law and three grandkids?! Really

I dunno it was established from the start that she has a habit of abandoning kids and never speaking to them for years. If the audience can except she had a bro and sis then not that big of a step to accept the bro is actually her son. Shirley is one messed up woman and this just adds to that, gives it more credence.

I do think it was a mistake to kill Kevin now more than ever.
It would've been nice to, as you ask, find out if he knew and find out what he made of the whole situation.

Anyway, in fairness there never was a hint there wasnt another child.

True.

We've always known her history, they even tried to retcon when she left Dean, when she first arrived it was he was a baby but this week we found out it was 14 yrs ago which would have made Dean around 12 (I think).
I wish they hadn't added this twist, the drowning thing was enough and I would rather see Shirley reconnect with Dean, then have this secret looming over her.

Surely the point of having a secret child is that it is secret?

Shirley is so messed up that anything in her past is possible, she might have told Hev but we didnt see it but I think Shirley blocked out that part of her life until Mick turned up on the square to buy the pub.

One assumes now that she was actually talking about Mick. She didn't say Dean, she said her son. It was around 15 years ago that she last saw Mick and Linda.

All we knew Shirley had 3 kids

But this drowning in the bath had puzzled me.

Either a fake death appeared that jimbo died who was actually mick and was put into care and Shirley announced to the rest that jimbo died hence why she didn't turn up to the funeral.

Or Shirley was raped and kept it a secret!

And dean said tonight he was a kid when she left and that it had been many years before Jimbo's death.

Lol exactly what I was going to say. I'm no fan of this twist and I really hoped it wouldn't go down this route but having a secret child only really works if you, um, keep it a secret, so that's not really the part to be picking on. I'm sure Kat didn't spend the seven years prior to her arrival chatting to all and sundry about the secret child she had because then it's not really a secret.

Oh yes, she seems to care more about Mick than Dean

No it's not weird for families to lose touch. My mom is a stellar example of this.

My brain didn't even compute that the Carter kids were Shirley's grand kids. Pfft.

I will admit I didn't see that coming. Though I knew where as soon as Shirley never referred to Dean by name throughout the entire episode where that was leading. So obvious.

This twist has been weird for me because it's a bit close to home(baby drowning attempts exempt) with my own mother. I won't go into detail. So...in a sense that works for me because I can buy how that can make your relationship with future children seriously difficult. But still kind of out nowhere.

Edit: I meant to add the only thing it does do it make it slightly more believable as to why Shirley would do something so extreme to Mick as a baby. I kind of was at a loss to see why she would do that her younger brother, but I find it slightly more easy to accept that a really young messed up girl might do something like that to a child she had. But how young was she? Pretty young I would guess as it wouldn't really be forgiveable for someone nearing adult age(later teens) but someone essentially still a child it's not quite as bad.

Retcon - a word once used in reference to a contradiction of explicitly stated facts and now used as a byword for any development in a character that isn't exactly to the user's liking.

Or Shirley had Mick too young (no rape) she couldnt cope with a baby had PND and tried to drown him or as someone else posted Mick could have slipped in the bath and Shirley froze.

Yeah we are fast heading into Hollyoaks ground. Its not the fact its another mother/child thing. I actually think this could be very different to Kat and Zoe, Its the fact its Shirley who had been established for 8 years never once mentioning the fact she had a grown up son in the form of mick. The whole reason she moved to Walford in the first place was to make peace with Dean and Carly. No mention of Mick or the fact she has three grandkids. It doesn't make sense. So I'm going to have a hard time believing it. The writing from this point on needs to be very realistic.

We didn't know anything about Shirley's past prior to Kevin so I don't think its hard to believe. I fail to see the retcon on that aspect.

Very accurate post.

Shirley has always been a bit of a skank but even she would have made it known before now. She's quite often mentioned how she messed up with Carly and Dean

They really haven't thought it through. Making her Mick's mum has also made Linda her daughter in law and Lee, Nancy and Johnny her grandchildren. I can't see them really building on any of these relationships except Shirley and Mick.

This... some people on here just love to moan! I think it's a pretty good twist and maybe once we hear how it happened and why it was a secret it might make more sense??
