I have all of ABBA's albums and it's really difficult to think of a 'Best' one:
Ring Ring - Such a different album. It was their debut and the songs sound like a mixture of the Mamas & Papas and Blue Mink. The lyrics are simplistic but there are good melodies in the songs. Best tracks on the album? Ring Ring, Disillusion and Love Isn't Easy (But It Sure Is Hard Enough)
Waterloo - More like the ABBA we know. However, there are a few tracks sung by Bjorn and even one sung by Benny, so it's still different to their later sound. It differs in styles from pop reggae to blues and glam rock. Best tracks on the album? Waterloo, My Mama Said, Hasta Manana and Watch Out
ABBA - This is the album with their first string of hits on it, from Mamma Mia to SOS. Their sound is perky, upbeat and full of life with definite glam rock influences. There is even an extended synthesiser tune performed by Benny! Best tracks on the album? SOS, So Long, Hey Hey Helen and I've Been Waiting For You
Arrival - This is considered by many to be ABBA's best album. It's definitely one of their strongest and the songs reflect the confidence and heartbreak that the group felt at the time. It starts strongly with a song which while lyrically weird, is catchy as hell and it grabs you until the last moment of that final instrumental song. Best tracks on the album? Knowing Me, Knowing You, Tiger, That's Me, Dancing Queen and My Love, My Life
ABBA: The Album - This is a weird little album, released at a time when ABBA could do no wrong. It starts of well, with an epic song but the final three songs are perhaps the weakest released by the group, forming a 'mini-musical' which doesn't make much sense covered in just these three tracks. Best tracks on the album? Eagle, Take A Chance on Me, One Man, One Woman and The Name of The Game
Voulez-Vous - This is the album which proved ABBA could move with the times. At the end of the 70s, the music chart was filled with disco hits and this is ABBA's take on the perky fad. There are a couple of songs on the album which definitely should have been released as singles and it's a real shame that they weren't. If you like disco, you'll love this album. Best tracks on the album? As Good As New, If It Wasn't For The Nights, Angeleyes, Voulez-Vous and Chiquitita
Super Trouper - Another amazing album from the group and musically, it is much darker than their predecessors. Sure there are light moments peppered throughout but the overall feel is one of change and renewal. It is a more vocally present album than 'Voulez-Vous', which relied on fast beats and the disco sound to carry it. With this, the vocals of Agnetha and Anni-Frid soar and produce some of the best songs ABBA have ever written. Best tracks on the album? Andante, Andante, Me and I, Super Trouper, The Winner Takes It All, The Piper and Our Last Summer
The Visitors - Finally, we have ABBA's darkest album. Lyrically and musically, this album feels like ABBA are saying goodbye. There is no overall positivity found on the album but some of the lyrics are witty and the songs are more epic and more expansive than ABBA had produced before. If you play this and their debut back to back, it feels like two completely different groups. Some of the songs are just brilliant in their world view and their bleakness only adds to the mystery and heartbreak surrounding its inception. OK, this is probably my favourite ABBA album because of all of this but especially due to the inclusion of songs like Under Attack and Head Over Heels. Best Tracks on the album? The Visitors, Under Attack, Head Over Heels, Soldiers and Two For The Price Of One.
I hope my little review has helped!
