For the second time today we're gonna have to disagree!

I personally found the Xmas special more straight forward and interesting than the 50th. It was still an average story but at least it didn't have the added requirements of the 50th and less subplots. The regeneration sucked off course but if I was offered the choice to which one to watch, Time And The Doctor would win each time.

I was disappointed and underwhelmed watching it on the night it aired.

Got the DVD for Christmas and rewatched it...it's now one of my favourite episodes. I think my expectation levels were so high that the first watching could never satisfy me whatever happened. Enjoyed it so much more the second time around without the hype and expectation. So...love it.

I watched it in a packed cinema in 3D in Sydney. The atmosphere was brilliant. Which really helps but I've seen it a few times since then and still really enjoyed it. Something about the Zygon but didn't really work for me but it was an amazing peice of work for a TV Show.

It will be a long time before I forget the 'gasp then cheer moment" of 300 people when the 'eyebrows' turned up. (All 13!)

I've rewatched this today (hangover cure!) I really enjoyed it - I think more so than the first time. Tennant and Smith were just joyous on screen together, as of course was Hurt - it's not often you get to see 3 actors on the top of their game on screen together. Loved having Billie Piper back because I love her in general. For me, the weak link wasn't the zygon story per se (as I think it had a place in it) but a) the fact it was basically unresolved and b) Joanna Page as Elizabeth I just didn't work, she was acted off the screen by the others.

Clara is my big bugbear at the moment. I don't know why she just doesn't work for me. Loved her in Asylum of the Daleks, but she's never reached those heights for me again.

I recall reading back the discussion thread on the night. It was mostly filled with vile throughout the running time - but noticed there was an exceptional amount of posters I had never seen before (and most, never seen again here) were talking about how terrible it all was for 90 minutes.

I think it was a nice reflection on our regulars who were out there watching it - before returning to a mostly positive reception to provide constructive feedback.

It just goes to show how a vocal minority can make it seem as though there's widespread discontent. The poll of registered DS forum members tells a very different story with the results showing overwhelming approval.

How do we know the poll wasent faked? Members could easily go on a massive multiple email addresses spree for their choice.

Sadly internet site polls mean jack s**t these days. Anyone could rig them.

What I do take personal objection to is it getting best story ever in DWM. Day was pretty boring at times & I could name a dozen story more better than day.

Got the Magazine yesterday and it was an interesting read. Liked the way it was broken down into decades. Pleased two of my favourites,Enlightenment and Kinda, got into the 80s top ten and the 60s choices were good....so EOTW has shot up then. Fine by me. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

One Pertwee in the 70s top ten feels a bit harsh. Oh, and I did smile when I saw two McCoy stories, Remembrance and Fenric, in the 80s top 5. Those darn revisionists at it again, I guess!

Why would anyone bother for the sake of swinging the result a forum poll? We've really wandered into tinfoil helmet territory if you're suggesting most of the 870 forum members who voted were duplicate accounts.

What about the BBC's 20,000-strong AI Panel? Did Moffat fans hatch a fiendish conspiracy to get themselves randomly-sampled, just so they could rig The Day of the Doctor's score of 89?

I bet they infiltrated the BARB Panel too. Such is their villainy.

You cant fix viewing figures but you can fix internet polls. Anyone can create a internet address and just register it to cast a vote.

Honestly. With the DWM poll I was a bit suprised how low certain stories I love were,but didn't think it was a conspiracy.

Well, seeing as the poll of DS members reflects the glowing approval of the Who-oriented GB poll (http://gallifreybase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=185856) and the BBC's scientifically-sampled AI Panel, it would appear that all available data shows overwhelming approval of The Day of the Doctor.

Evidence for mass disapproval, however, appears to consist of a vague notion that there's a silent majority of unhappy viewers.

No conspiracy Ive seen it happen before.

There was a cover forum and they did a poll a couple years ago. One pick was winning & then suddenly with one day left to go it got bombarded with people registering to cast the lesser choice that was the last in place and time the poll ended that choice ended up shooting through the roof with a high number.

The mods & admins were pissed! In the end they cancelled the poll as it was in certain sections so while that choice did win they just gave up on doing the other parts of the poll.

In this instance, the success of The Day of the Doctor depended largely upon viewing figures, iPlayer hits and AI Panel results. So it seems highly unlikely that a significant proportion of the 870 DS members and the 4432 GB members went to the effort of creating multiple accounts for polls which had little or no bearing on the show's perceived success.

You're clinging to the remote possibility that there could sort of maybe have been fraud, rather than presenting actual evidence of fraud in this instance. The fact remains that informal self-sampling methods (such as forum polls) and strict representative sampling procedures both show overwhelming approval for The Day of the Doctor.

Both online and in terms of viewing figures, the 2013 episodes were clearly successful.
Personally they weren't my favourites, and Matt Smith isn't my favourite Doctor either, so I'm no Smith apologist, but I'm happy to accept that Smith, Moffat's tenure as producer and the whole 50th anniversary shebang has been a big success for the show and for the BBC.
Doctor Who is successful because a lot of people like it. And most of those people don't bother with forums and message boards and online polls. Trying to invent conspiracies to explain the success of the something you don't like seems pointless to me.

I really liked it although I will admit that it is mostly due to the interaction between the 10th and 11th Doctors along with the Hurt Doctor. Also, it was just really good to see David Tennant again as the 10th Doctor. As a special bonus, Billie Piper was the Moment, not Rose, so I was spared the sight of Rose and the 10th Doctor running around and carrying on as they did in Series 2, which almost ruined my interest in New Who entirely.

Certainly I thought it was a lot better than "The Time of the Doctor" which followed and which I think is a poor episode. What a shame Matt Smith didn't have a better episode for his last one.

I do think, though, that "The Night of the Doctor" strongly implied that there was going to be this big conflict between the Hurt Doctor and the 11th Doctor and that the Hurt Doctor was going to be a "dark" character to some extent and that just fizzled out. The Hurt Doctor showed up (and he could have been one of Wilf's friends) and started trading quips with the other Doctors. Just one of the boys. I therefore see no reason why Paul McGann couldn't have been the War Doctor.

Oh, I don't know. I mean, during The Day of the Doctor, yes, he's benign, and very recognisably the Doctor... but, that's in his last moments, and he's had a long old life.

We don't see the Doctor as a warrior in that huge and unfilmable Time War - we see John Hurt giving up. We know what the Doctor's capable of, in his darkest moments, and he's had a lifetime full of them. I don't think you'd believe Paul McGann's romantic Doctor with the rose-tinted lenses could spend a couple of centuries fighting dirty. He's an open-hearted Doctor who longs to see the best of people - even in his final moments - and the Day of the Doctor required a battle-scarred Doctor. He was ready to annihilate two species, and it took a lot of bloodshed to get him there.

I think Paul McGann's ending was fitting for the Doctor he was - he was trying, against all odds, to remain a conscientious objector. The war wages and he just wants to escape, travel the stars.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. I don't see the Paul McGann Doctor being this great romantic. Yes, he's good-looking, wore old-fashioned clothes that he looked great in and had a brief romance with Grace but I don't see him as being more romantic than the 10th Doctor. Furthermore, I think it's safe to say that many people who went off to WWI and WWII were changed by their experiences and what they went through and also found themselves doing things they wouldn't have done before.

I also didn't get the impression that the Hurt Doctor was "battle-scarred", more like he needed a good night's sleep after being up too late watching television. Certainly I didn't look at him and see this great warrior, like some kind of Rambo who is now winding down.

This isn't to say I didn't like Hurt's performance in general but I think he was brought in for the name recognition and the fact that Moffat needed another regeneration in order to force the regeneration limit issue.

A poster on another website wrote the following which I think is really good and I agree with:

"It would have been credible had the War Doctor actually lived up to the sense of dread and foreboding that hung around him in his appearance at the end of "The Name of the Doctor" but by the time he came to DOTD the lion had turned into a kitten and he does nothing that another Doctor would not have."

Exactly. Hence "she wasn't showing me just any future, she was showing me exactly the future I needed to see". The stasis cubes, the connected screwdrivers, the determination of the later Doctors to never repeat a moment like the genocide of the Time Lords and Daleks again.
