Is the old soap duopoly of EastEnders + Corrie winning the big awards over?
For years now we have had 2 big soaps arguably 3 and then Hollyoaks.
In terms of awards especially the big awards ie best soap the two big soaps Coronation Street and EastEnders have dominated. This has slowly been chipped away but to my mind Hollyoaks winning best soap takes us into a totally new scenario in terms of these soap awards. Just as theres been talk in politics of the political duopoly or dominance of Labour and the tories being over first with the lib dem coalition and now UKIP upsetting all parties political strategies. I would say its now the same with the soap awards, the old duoploy dominance of Coronation Street and EastEnders is bust. Everythings now up for grabs at these awards now. We dont have to like it or respect why people vote the way they do but its the new era in my opinion. A 4 soap system just like a 4 party political system? |

Nope, one of the big two will win it next year (and you can bookmark that) as EastEnders has a decent producer in this time. Hollyoaks winning (low ratings and all) just sums up a bad year for soap.

I think it's great personally, at least it's not predictable. My only problem is Emmerdale can't catch a break in either scenario lol

It needs to be put into prospective. Unless Hollyoaks start winning at other award shows only then can it be taken seriously. I think this win discredits the BSAs personally and does raise questions about mutli voting.
Hollyoaks never makes the short lists for the BAFTA or RTS awards. So the high brow award shows aren't taking it seriously. |

Not saying I wanted this particular win but I do think its healthy and will help reduce complacency and smugness amongst the big two.Whenever these type of changes occur were those whove gotten used to dominating have their monopoly challenged and their feathers are well and truly ruffled like the change is so unexpected for a while it outrages them.

Definately, it seems strange that a soap with 3m viewers could win over a soap with 6-9m viewers.

No, I think that this year is just a one off as 2013 for BOTH soaps were horrendously bad, but I'm surprised that Corrie didn't win Best Soap

If Corrie and EE viewers also mass vote with hundreds of emails, they too might win Best Soap! lol
In fact as HO gets 700,000 viewers sometimes, they'll have no chance if Corrie and EE millions do the block email sending. They'll be wise to it next year after what happened tonight! lol |

Hollyoaks does even get 2 million
And your point being? Its a good booze up for the soapstars not much more! Its not about which soap has most viewers but which soaps fans are most active and passionate. These type of awards by definition reward the most proactive fans.A winner is a winner cant see the reason for moaning about the awards system. The key is take them less seriously both fans and industry people. |

![]() Coronation Street - Conservative (The oldest one that keeps doing well) EastEnders - Labour (The other big one that is slightly newer) Emmerdale - Liberal Democrat (The third one that everyone knows about, but never really votes for it) Hollyoaks - UKIP (The underdog that surprises everyone) Doctors - Greens (That other one that everyone forgets about) River City - SNP (Well, they are both Scottish)

The other day I saw some EastEnders fans on Twitter block voting and bragging. I have not moaned and whined about it.
Quality not quantity. |

I think Hollyoaks will have another chance next year if they continue the way they are going.
